I consider All Classical, its on-air hosts and staff an integral part of my life. I was a member, but thought I could do more. As a volunteer, I now appreciate the behind-the-sound administration, data crunching and technical work that supports the great music we hear daily. My philosophy is "plug me in wherever you need me." Now I know a little bit more about everything that makes this station one of America's best venues for classical music. Besides that, volunteers are treated as part of the All Classical family. And that simply adds to the fun of being a regular part of it all.

Radio has been my companion for as long as I can recall. Whether it's 2 a.m. or 2 p.m., All Classical FM has the unique power to simultaneously relax, console and invigorate. I am proud and honored to be a part of its continued availability to all of us.

Classical music is my passion. When I came to the Northwest several years ago it was a great joy to discover All Classical, and I volunteered to answer phones during pledge drives. As I started serving on a regular basis and got to know the people and personalities here, I realized that I had found a volunteer home. All Classical is an integral part of my life, and I really appreciate the opportunity to support the activities here. We are extremely fortunate in the Pacific Northwest to have this precious entity that provides classical music for us all.

I became interested in radio while in grade school when my Dad and I visited a network radio station. That led to my Benson High School broadcast training at KBPS AM which even included hosting an evening classical show. However, a less exciting career path took me out of the area for several decades. Last year I returned. As I approached Portland, my first task was to tune to a classical station and, to my good fortune, I found All Classical FM! Volunteering just a few yards away from my old high school broadcast facilities is just like coming home. The variety of interesting tasks and the friendly station personnel make my volunteer days great fun and a highlight of my week.

Back in the '70s and '80s, Portland had classical music stations on AM and FM but, one by one, they changed programming formats. Then I discovered 89.9 FM, and have been a faithful listener and member ever since. The on-air hosts and office staff have become a special family to me. They are so wonderful. What a privilege to actually be part of the All Classical family.

A mutual love and enjoyment of classical music was an early element of attraction in our relationship. Since then we have enjoyed developing more knowledge of the music. When we moved to Portland more than 10 years ago, we found 89.9 and then saw a solicitation for volunteer support. Since meeting volunteer director Mary Evjen, we have been involved in various forms of support for the station: tabling at concerts, answering phones during pledge drives, and providing office support. Having represented the station at several  opera events we have grown from novice listeners to lovers of the genre. We think KQAC is a musical blessing to Portland.

He shared with us his great love of listening to and performing, and I think of him every time I pick up my flute. When I became a “new native” of this wonderful metro nearly 20 years ago, I was delighted to find this 24/7 home for classical music on my FM dial.  I quickly and happily became a supporting member.  How could I not?  As a free-lance musician, I recognized the immeasurable support All Classical provides Portland-area artists and arts organizations. I’m thrilled to be able to supplement my financial contributions by participating as a member of our volunteer team.  How do I describe my relationship with AllClassical?  Synergy at its most satisfying!

As a classically trained, professional musician I have spent the better part of my life immersed in music. From performing to producing and planning concerts, I have experienced virtually every aspect of live musical performance. After retiring from the military I decided to move to Portland, and not just because of the coffee… really. I’m all about the music, and being in such a musically diverse and culturally rich city as Portland has been a great experience for me. My decision to lend my time and talent to All Classical is a great way to become more familiar with the local classical music community.  It is my hope that my contributions to this great organization continue to grow.

A generation ago, a handful of radio stations in Portland broadcast classical music. Today only one does: All Classical. At some point during those years of attrition, listening while grading papers and tests, I decided I'd become a volunteer after retiring from teaching. Four years ago I first stepped inside the offices behind Benson High School, and now one of my afternoons each week consists of answering phones, processing mail, and posting events on the Cultural Calendar. Of course, I still listen as I work, but on those volunteer days it's special, somewhat akin to model railroading with real trains.

Pledge Drive

Pledge drive volunteers are needed three times yearly (fall, spring and summer) to answer phones. This position is so much fun we have volunteers who return as regulars time and time again. Meet the All Classical staff, special guests and other volunteers too. The fun starts early in the morning and continues in 3 to 4 hour shifts through the evening. An assortment of edibles is provided to help everyone along. Besides loving the station, a flexible and friendly attitude and good penmanship is a must.

Every contribution we receive by mail or on the internet is another step toward our goal of being the best classical music station. As Needed

We're developing a list of volunteers who can only be available every now and then or at the last minute. One-time tasks often crop up, so these volunteers help cover those temporary needs. Let us know what your job preferences are, what types of assignments you want, or inform us of a special skill you might contribute to the station, and we'll contact you when needed. If you're available when we call, that'll be great; if not, there'll always be a next time!

Corporate Support

Our underwriting department needs a volunteer to help with routine tasks, 10-12 hours per week, flexible hours. Requirements include dependability, flexibility, attention to detail and possibly some graphic design experience.
