Sometimes it is best just to copy a bio provided by the author: Karen Thompson Walker was born and raised in San Diego, California, where The Age of Miracles is set. She studied English and creative writing at UCLA, where she wrote for the UCLA Daily Bruin. After college, she worked as a newspaper reporter in the San Diego area before moving to New York City to attend the Columbia University MFA program. A former book editor at Simon & Schuster, she wrote The Age of Miracles in the mornings before work—sometimes while riding the subway. The Age of Miracles tells the story of the slowing of the earth’s rotation, and the slow-motion apocalypse that results. The narrator is Julia, an 11-year-old whose life is not only affected by the global tragedy, but by the usual horrors of middle school and family problems. Life, it seems, goes on.
