Portland Center Stage: Black Pearl Sings!
Playing through June 17
In 1935 Texas, Susannah, an academic and song collector for the Library of Congress, visits a high-security prison where she meets Pearl, an African-American woman imprisoned for murder who longs to leave prison and find her lost daughter. Hoping to record the treasure trove of spirituals and African folk songs that only Pearl knows—and make her reputation on the discoveries—Susannah bargains for Pearl’s parole and arranges for several public performances. The two women soon find themselves walking a delicate line between exposure and exploitation. Featuring beautiful a cappella renditions of little-known American folk songs, Black Pearl Sings! chronicles a powerful story about being a woman in a man’s world, being black in a white world, and fighting for one’s soul in a world where anyone can be a commodity. Performances run from April 24 through June 17. Visit link below for dates and times as well as to purchase tickets. In the Ellyn Bye Studio of the Gerding Theater at the Amory, 128 NW Eleventh Avenue, Portland, 97209.

Artists Repertory Theatre:
Next to Normal - Playing Through June 3
So what is it that defines “crazy” anyway?
Called a groundbreaking, powerhouse rock musical, Next to Normal, is a heart-swelling, searingly painful dissection of a mother’s mental illness and her suburban family trying to hold it all together. This multiple award-winning smash hit is a brave, powerfully emotional musical that takes on new territory with a mix of raw energy and grace. “Like all good musicals, it breaks your heart without crushing your hope" says reviewer Charles McNulty of the Los Angeles Times. Next to Normal was nominated for 11 and won three 2009 Tony Awards and the 2010 Pulitzer Prize. Susannah Mars plays the lead in this West Coast regional theater premiere. Shows run through June 3; visit the link below for play dates and times, as well as to reserve tickets. In the Artist Repertory Theatre on the Morrison Stage, 1515 SW Morrison, Portland 97205.

His plays and performances have been seen throughout the Americas and Europe and include Electricidad; Oedipus el Rey; Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner; Black Butterfly; No Holds Barrio; Bitter Homes & Gardens and Straight as a Line. DIRECTOR Elizabeth Huffman's most recent directing projects were King John for Northwest Classical Theatre Company, Oedipus the King and Trojan Women for Classic Greek Theatre of Oregon.

Portland Opera: Candide
Through May 19
In the Age of Enlightenment, people thought they lived in "the best of all possible worlds" because of the power of human reason. Armed with that belief, our naive hero, Candide, ventures out into the big wide world expecting to find truth, beauty and wonder. He finds instead pestilence, plague and pox (to name but a few)! Some 40 fast-paced scenes whisk our hero around the globe -- and us along with him -- in a galloping, humorous and touching trip. Where does he end up? Right back where he started ... but with a slightly changed view of life. Yes, there's evil. Yes, there's good. And when it's all tallied up, it's not such a bad life after all. (It helps, of course, that he gets the girl in the end!) Sung in English with projections above the stage. Performances run through May 19. Visit link below for dates, times and to purchase tickets. At the Keller Auditorium, 222 SW Clay St, Portland, 97201.

Imago Theatre: Yukio Mishima’s The Black Lizard
Through June 2
Anne Sorce (recently in Zugzwang) performs the lead role of Black Lizard. Matt DiBiasio plays her nemesis detective Kogorô Akechi. The Black Lizard delves deeply into the psyche of the heroine, who embodies many of Mishima’s own pathologies, but at the same time the play is a campy, sexy, and hilarious romp through Japan in the 1960s. Characters take on multiple identities and don disguises with a frequency seen only in kabuki, and settings range from posh hotel suites, to Tokyo Tower, to a ship at sea. As in kabuki, leading characters are given long monologues to reveal their innermost feelings, and in Jerry Mouawad’s direction these are presented in “chamber” style with influences from Richard Forman. Imago’s The Black Lizard is a verbally sophisticated, physically energetic, and visually sumptuous play—attempting to bring a contemporary fusion of kabuki and melodrama to Portland audiences. The production contains nudity and is recommended for adults only. Tickets: $15 to $30 (pay what you can). Performances run through June 2. Visit link below for dates and times as well as to purchase tickets or call 503.224.8499. At Imago Theatre, 17 SE 8th Ave., Portland, 97214.

Ethos Music Center: ETHOS-A-ROKE
Karaoke Marathon
Ethos formed in 1998 in response to a funding crisis in music and arts education. Since then, the problem has only worsened, with music education slashed from school budgets throughout Oregon and across the nation. Ethos is built on the tenet that music education “beats the streets” and when given a positive outlet, at-risk kids learn discipline and improved self-confidence that keeps them engaged with their families, their communities and their futures.
Ethos-A-Roke is the second karaoke marathon from 6 p.m. to midnight (doors at 5:30 p.m.) to benefit music education. Teams of one to 24 people can register for a three-hour time slot in their own private karaoke suite and raise pledges for Ethos, a nonprofit dedicated to bringing music education to underserved communities. Prizes will be awarded to the team and individual that raises the most. We’ll have a red carpet-style photo backdrop, a swag bag and other fanfare as karaoke divas make an entrance. All ages until 7 p.m. Sign up at link below. At Voicebox Karaoke, 2112 N.W. Hoyt Street, Portland, 97210.
