The Golem – The 1920 Horror Masterpiece – with live soundtrack by Beth Karp • Ringo Zeitgeist. Beth Karp is a versatile pianist and composer based here in Portland. She serves on the faculty of Portland Community College as well as maintaining an active performing schedule as a solo and collaborative artist. According to legend, a 16th-century rabbi brought to life a giant clay automaton in order to protect the Jews of Prague from persecution. Paul Wegener’s 1920 film The Golem, a masterpiece of German Expressionism, retells the legend in a grand and atmospheric tour de force. Beth Karp’s original piano score, described as “scintillating” by Oregon Artswatch, is based on Jewish music of the Renaissance, minimalism, and German Romanticism.
