In 1806, Beethoven wrote his three Op. 59 string quartets on the commission of Count Andreas Razumovsky. These “middle” quartets—numbers 7, 8 and 9 of Beethoven’s 16—possess a distinctly “Russian” character, and were recently recorded by the Miró Quartet in their endeavor to record the complete series of Beethoven’s quartets. Tonight the Miró performs the set of three Razumovsky quartets in succession.
