Program includes Sibelius’ Finlandia; Piano Concerto of Schumann and Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 3, “Scottish”. An ode to his beloved homeland, Sibelius’s score symbolized Finland’s struggle with Russian oppression and has become an unofficial national anthem as well as a concert hall favorite throughout the world. Schumann’s deeply felt Concerto provides pianist Antonio Pompa-Baldi with an opportunity to shine musically and technically. Inspired by a trip to Scotland when he was just 20, Mendelssohn’s Symphony suggests mist-shrouded castles and tartan-clad warriors. Grant Llewellyn, guest conductor.
