Lara Downes: Between Two Worlds
The pianist, well known to local audiences through her appearances at Portland Piano International, performs music by Erich Wolfgang Korngold, including his Sonata No. 2, composed in Vienna at the age of 13. Premiered by the great pianist Artur Schnabel, who proclaimed it one of the greatest virtuoso works of the day, the work has been largely forgotten until its recent revival by Downes, who features it on her new album Exiles’ Cafe. This special event also features a conversation with Korngold’s granddaughter about her grandfather’s work, his escape from Hitler’s Europe, and his career in Hollywood.
