Rick Trostel is a recent immigrant from Alaska and is still principal trumpet of the Juneau Symphony. In his first Portland performance, before an international audience of 3000, he conducted his own composition with his Juneau community orchestra to a standing ovation.
Jennifer Van Atta is a life-long Oregonian, Oberlin-trained pianist, and physician’s assistant. Rick and Jennifer met while moonlighting as ski instructors. This is their first collaboration.
Program includes Siete Canciones Populares Españoles of Manuel De Falla and Aaron Copland’s Old American Songs. An unapologetic art music concert with liberal and enlightening interpretation to make it accessible to whole families. The trumpet is the folk instrument in these settings. The piano cradles the earthy folk melodies in the etherial interpretations of the respective composers. Program repeats May 31, 3:00 PM.
This is a fundraiser for Lewis and Clark Montessori Charter School, an Oregon Public Charter School sponsored by the Gresham Barlow School District. Rick teaches music at the school.
