NW New Music: Bartók and Rzewski
This program presents Bartók’s Contrasts, based on Hungarian and Romanian dance rhythms, in the company of music by Frederic Rzewski, born in 1938, the same year Contrasts was composed. Rzewski is an inventive composer who uses a variety of techniques, including speech as a musical element, along with vibrant rhythmic propulsion. Clarinetist Louis DeMartino; flutist Sarah Tiedemann; pianist Susan Smith; cellist Diane Chaplin; percussionist Florian Conzetti; saxophonist Kim Reece; and violinist Emily Cole, Tylor Neist and Hae-Jin Kim perform.
