On the 30th anniversary of George Balanchine’s death, we celebrate the diversity of his contribution to dance with three very different examples of his choreography. La Valse shows Balanchine’s darkly romantic side, as a young girl unwittingly waltzes her way into the arms of death. Prodigal Son, a 1929 collaboration with modernist painter Georges Roualt and composer Sergei Prokofiev, is one of Balanchine’s earliest and most adventurous works, pulling pathos and passion out of the bible parable. Completing the celebration is the return of audience favorite Square Dance, including live square dance caller and chamber ensemble. Performances run through June 16.
