Two of the newest members of the music faculty, Susan DeWitt Smith, piano, and Gregory Ewer, violin, join Miriam English Ward, viola, Dorien de León, cello, and Jason Schooler, bass to perform a program of the Piano Quartet in E-flat Major by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Gioacchino Rossini's the Duo for cello and bass and the Piano Quintet in A Major The Trout by Franz Schubert. The Warner Wind Ensemble of Warner Pacific College is holding auditions in September for Community Musicians who would like to join the ensemble. Oregon Symphony and Rufus Wainwright Pair
for Season Opener
Expect the unexpected when internationally acclaimed singer, songwriter and opera composer Rufus Wainwright shares the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall stage with Music Director Carlos Kalmar and sopranos Janis Kelly and Megan Hart. It's a two-part program featuring excerpts from Wainwright's controversial new opera Prima Donna, performed by British soprano Janis Kelly, and selections from Berlioz's song cycle Les Nuits d'ete, tunes from his widely celebrated recent re-creation of Judy Garland's legendary 1961 Carnegie Hall concert.

Portland Chamber Orchestra: Chopiniade
The Portland Chamber Orchestra, in collaboration with the Portland Festival Ballet, presents a concert to celebrate the music of Frederic Chopin in the beloved composer’s 200th anniversary year. The first half of the concert features solo piano works performed by Mei-Ting Sun — with choreography by John Magnus, artistic director of the PFB — followed by the world premiere of a commissioned orchestral ballet suite, Homage to Chopin, by young local composer, Katerina Kramarchuck. The work is inspired by Chopin’s musical language. The heartfelt Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 1 in E minor will conclude what promises to be a memorable event. Portland Chamber Orchestra: Chopiniade
A spectacular all day marathon of Chopin’s music on Sept. 11th will create an exciting opening of the PCO’s 2010/2011 season. Chopiniade features free recitals by many young Portland musicians at Reed College’s Kaul Auditorium, along with a Master Class coached by the brilliant young virtuoso and National Chopin Piano Competition gold medal winner, pianist Mei-Ting Sun.

Imagine experiencing music as Mozart might have presented it 225 years ago. No electric lighting – all candlelit. No electronic amplification – all acoustic. No printed program – rather, a surprising and enchanting program with a warm, spontaneous feel. Now imagine hearing not only the dulcet sounds of Mozart’s era, but also an eclectic mix of crossover, jazz, folk and pop pieces from the 21st Century – many of them original, even a didgeridoo or two. All presented by some of the most accomplished musicians, teachers and composers in the Portland area today. An Afternoon in New York
Salem Chamber Orchestra’s 26th season features talented musicians right here in Oregon, as well as repertoire by beloved composers. Today's concert is an American-themed program featuring SCO concertmaster Dr. Daniel Rouslin in a performance of Samuel Barber’s beautiful Concerto for Violin, in honor of the composer’s 100th birthday. The program also includes Gershwin’s beloved Rhapsody in Blue with pianist Victor Steinhardt, and Copland’s Appalachian Spring. Michael Gesme, music director of Central Oregon Symphony (Bend) and Linfield Chamber Orchestra (McMinnville) will conduct the program in Hudson Hall, Willamette University Salem OR.

Hideki Yamaya is a guitarist and lutenist active as a performer and teacher for over 15 years. Based in Portland, Oregon, his concerts and teaching cover the West Coast. In 1981 Foti Lycouridis started his music education at the University of Portland, Oregon. He graduated with a Bachelor of Music in Classical Guitar Performance and a Master of Music in Music Theory. Foti Lycouridus and Hideki Yamaya perform transcriptions and works composed for guitar by F.J. Haydn, Johan Kaspar Mertz, Domenico Cimarosa, Federico Mompou, and Arigirs Koundadis. Mark Nelson, Hawaiian Slack-Key Guitarist
The Tigard Public Library’s free outdoor summer concert series concludes with Hawaiian slack-key guitarist Mark Nelson. Hawaiian Slack-key guitar is a unique style of tuning achieved by loosening or slackening the guitar keys. The bass sound is played on the lower register while the melody is played on the higher register at the same time. This unique blending of sounds results in an intricate, rich and soulful harmony. A Night of Violin Pyrotechnics
Violin superstar Joshua Bell joins Carlos Kalmar and the Oregon Symphony on the Schnitzer Concert Hall stage for one performance only.
He'll play Edouard Lalo's Symphonie espagnole for Violin and Orchestra on his famous 1713 Stradivarius, and the orchestra also plays the Overture to Nielsen's Maskarade, the Suite from Aaron Copland's The Tender Land and George Enescu's Rumanian Rhapsody No. 1.
