The 300th Anniversary of Handel’s Water Music is on Monday, July 17th! Tune in to All Classical Portland for special “water themed” programming throughout the day. Hear favorites such as Strauss’ Blue Danube Waltz and Debussy’s La Mer, Britten’s Sea Interlude(s) and Smetana’s Die Moldau, …and more! The centerpiece of course, will be Handel’s beloved masterpiece, written as a collection of orchestral movements, often published as three suites. The work premiered on July 17, 1717, in response to King George I’s request for a concert on the River Thames. Wanting to experience music surrounded by the beauty and additional sounds of nature, the king was so pleased with the Water Music that he ordered it to be repeated at least three times, both on the trip upstream to Chelsea and on the return to Whitehall.
