I am eternally indebted to a friend who told me, in 1994, “You have to read ‘March Violets’ by this Kerr guy.”
The books featured a cynical, principled detective in 1930s Berlin who is just trying to do his job, as the Nazis change everything. Bernie Gunther is his name, and I have read every Kerr novel featuring this character ever since. In short, I was thrilled to speak with Philip Kerr, and you can probably tell from the tone of the interview. His latest Gunther novel is The Other Side of Silence.
