Fabulous February Fantasia
Cascadia Composers presents Fabulous February Fantasia, a program with locally grown chamber music for flute, clarinet, saxophones, strings, piano, percussion and voices. Dream away the winter blues at this concert featuring a mélange of melodious compositions by members of Cascadia Composers: Matthew Neil Andrews, Elizabeth Blachly-Dyson, Denis Floyd, Jack Gabel, Matthew Kaminski, Stephen Lewis, Sheli Nan, Timothy O’Brien, Paul Safar, Dawn Sonntag, Daniel Vega, Jeff Winslow and Linda Woody.
Audiences will delight in exciting and contrasting pieces inspired by modern paintings (Kandinsky, Bacon), science fiction heroines, a swarthy satin grand piano, an act of political protest, a cat and three types of birds (mountain quail, Stellar’s jay, Swainson’s thrush), the myriad faces of the skies in summer, and in at least one case the composer’s own name.
Performers include Matt Andrews; voice and percussion; Julie Asparro, viola; Tom Bergeron, tenor saxophone; Kai Bryngelson, violin; Alicia Carlton, clarinet; David Chvorun, Corrin Coffey, voice and percussion; Hanaa El-Warari, voice and percussion; Sharon Eng, viola; Maria Garcia, piano; Julia Kinzler, voice and percussion; Tatiana Kolchanova, violin; Amelia Lukas, flute; Susan McDaniel, piano; Ben Murphy, voice and percussion; Monica Ohuchi, Collin Oldham, cello; Patrick Rooney, voice and percussion; Katherine Schultz, cello; Alexander J. Schwarzkopf, piano; Annie Zhang, cello. Composers performing their own works are Tim O’Brien, Paul Safar, Jeff Winslow, Sheli Nan and Dawn Sonntag.
Fantasias and boogies and fandangos rub elbows with laments and dirges and audience participation chants. Winter gives way to spring. Light and hope begin to stream back into the world. All is fabulous. Don’t miss this Fabulous February Fantasia—a fantastic evening of music by Oregon composers and musicians.
