Portland State University: Paquito d’Rivera
Winner of fourteen GRAMMY Awards, D’Rivera is celebrated both for his artistry in Latin jazz and his achievements as a classical composer. His numerous recordings include more than 30 solo albums. He has appeared as a soloist with numerous orchestras including the London Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the National Symphony Orchestra, D’Rivera is the recipient of the NEA Jazz Masters Award, the National Medal of the Arts, as well as the Living Jazz Legend Award from the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
The PSU concert features D’Rivera performing alongside the PSU Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Derek Sims, and in a jazz quintet led by PSU Jazz professor and pianist George Colligan. D’Rivera also performs some of his award-winning chamber music in collaboration with PSU faculty Hamilton Cheifetz, Julia Lee, and Darrell Grant.
As part of his residency, D’Rivera presents a Masterclass on Tuesday, November 28th at 5:00 PM in PSU Lincoln Hall Room 37.
