University of Portland: Tartuffe by Molière, directed by Gregory Pulver
Molière’s 1664 masterpiece is a comedy with themes of piety, hypocrisy, and gullibility that still resonates with modern audiences. Orgon is duped by his recent border, Tartuffe who presents himself as a zealous holy man. Though Orgon’s daughter is already betrothed to another, Orgon is prepared to marry her off to Tartuffe instead. Orgon is so taken in by Tartuffe’s holy act that he cannot see that Tartuffe is trying to seduce his own wife, Elmire. Will hypocrisy win out, or will reason be restored?
