University of Portland: Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Octet
Celebrating African American History Month, the Jazz Ensemble performs compositions by bassist Charles Mingus. During the ’50s and ’60s, Mingus’ recordings were considered some of the strongest protest music of the Civil Rights Movement. His music encompasses the entirety of jazz from New Orleans, to bebop, to avant-garde, and his virtuosic playing paved the way for modern jazz bassists.
In a preview of their upcoming PDX Jazz Festival performance, UP’s Jazz Octet will present a selection of music by Canadian/British composer Kenny Wheeler, arranged by director Matthew Postle.
