ON THIS ALL-PREMIERE PROGRAM:
Gustavo Ramírez Sansano – The Spanish choreographer and former Artistic Director of Luna Negra Dance Theater in Chicago makes his NW Dance Project live debut with a new work that reflects and celebrates NW Dance Project’s two decades of work and varied creations. A colorful and dynamic full-company piece set to the iconic music of Mozart and featuring a sublime set from Spanish designer Luis Crespo (who conceived and created the sets for our smash hit “Carmen”), experience “a celebration of the City of Roses and of life expressed through the art of dance.”
Nicole von Arx, a Swiss & British performer and choreographer based in New York City since 2008, is also creating with NW Dance Project for the first time. She is crafting a full-company, 20+ minute work veering into the realm of dance theater. Focused on the theme of power, the new creation delves into the intricate dynamics between people and explores the juxtaposition of human power versus the forces of nature. The work will blend choreography, musicality, and theatricality to emphasize the dichotomy of “I vs. them” and “us vs. it.” Get ready for a highly physical and dynamic work, employing minimalist stage design and props, with touches of sly humor.
Joseph Hernandez has created eight original works for NW Dance Project and was named Associate Choreographer in 2022. His latest piece, created on five female dancers (Quincie Bean, Ingrid Ferdinand, Nicole Hennington, Alejandra Preciado, and Lucia Tozzi), each with a very distinctive personality (“a mix of cabaret performers and survivors of a natural disaster”). Tentatively titled “Fistful of Love”, the 20+ minute work is “centered around the exploration of dance as a space for unimaginable shifts in practice” and “focuses on the individual performers and the histories that lie in their bodies.” Having previously wildly re-told the classical ballet tale of “Petrushka”, Joseph is focusing on “themes of global warming, love, grief, and hope, with the goal of reflecting the whiplash we’ve witnessed living under a confluence of oppressive systems, at increasingly unsure times.”

Join us for our monthly Kindness Farm song circle for community led by Family System Music Medicine: Jake Sullivan and Lou Lé. During the warmer months these will take place at the farm. During the colder months, we’re grateful to be sponsored by Yoga Refuge, who is providing their beautiful space for us to gather.
No singing experience is required – we mean it! Communal singing is about sharing song together and all voices are welcome as they are. All songs will be taught call and echo style.
✨Purpose and Intention✨
The purpose of this gathering is to create a safe, nourishing space for us to support each other communaly through singing and movement practices. In the face of so much global and personal grief, our intention is to create a container where we all feel welcome and accepted exactly as we are… with our sadness, grief, pain, and anger, along with our joy, connectedness, love, and laughter. It is all welcome here. We are all welcome here.
We’ll be engaging in a combination of movement practices, meditation, and and of course, communal signing.
✨Important Community Agreements✨
Our Kindness Farm community is a safe, inclusive, healing space for many different kinds of people. We come from diverse backgrounds and include refugees, immigrants, queer and trans folx, BIPOC, neurodivergent individuals, individuals with disabilities, individuals who currently or in the past have had low incomes, youth, and seniors.By joining the farm community, you agree to honor the differences between us, to show kindness and respect to everyone you meet, and to cherish all of our collective freedom to be exactly as we are.
You do not have to have any signing experience, know how to sing, or think you’re a good singer. We welcome all voices to come experience the transformative, healing power of communal song.
We encourage and welcome your autonomy through all parts of this gathering. If any of the practices we engage in aren’t right for you in that moment, you can simply opt out of them with absolutely no judgment. You’re always welcome to just sit, listen, and care for yourself in whatever ways are needed in the moment.
