In the early 80’s, Mr. DePreist broke his leg and I x-rayed it. I was new to Oregon and didn’t know his reputation. I mentioned to him that I was interested in singing in the Portland Symphonic Choir. He said he would speak with the director. When he came back for a recheck, he was true to his word. Shortly after, I joined the choir and sang with them for 13 years. As I listened to the Symphony and the Symphonic Choir perform Beethoven’s 9th last Saturday night, I kept seeing images of Depreist’s exuberant baton gestures. He, alone, brought the music alive. I’m enjoying your wonderful tribute this morning. Thank you. –Edna
