ABOUT
Originally premiered at Opera Theatre of Saint Louis in 2019, Blanchard’s profound work weaves together jazz and gospel idioms to tell the story of a young Black man growing up in a rural Louisiana town. The title comes from the Book of Jeremiah: “His word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was weary with forbearing, and I could not stay.”
Lauded by the New York Times as “a fresh, affecting work,” the opera is an adaptation of Charles M. Blow’s moving memoir.
Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducting. Libretto by Kasi Lemmons.
