Portland Chamber Orchestra presents two fresh perspectives on Mussorgsky’s composition for keyboard, also familiar in Ravel’s orchestration. First, under Maestro Yaacov Bergman, PCO performs a version for chamber orchestra by Julian Yu employing percussion to give a flavor of Yu’s native China to the work. In the second half of the concert, Israeli conductor and composer Yaron Gottfried directs a rendition for jazz trio and chamber orchestra, with the original themes dressed in new colors and open to improvisation. Two performances: 7:30 pm. on May 9 in Astoria’s Liberty Theater and at 3 p.m. on May 11 in Agnes Flanagen Chapel on the campus of Lewis & Clark College. Check with PCO for more details and to reserve tickets.
