The William Byrd Festival has been a beloved annual event in Portland since 1998. English conductor and organist Mark Williams, along with his Oxford colleague Jeremy Summerly, will return this August for the 21st annual celebration. They will direct the award-winning choir Cantores in Ecclesia in a three-week festival of musical masterpieces by William Byrd and his European contemporaries. After two decades of exploring the English Renaissance, and the entirety of William Byrd’s sacred vocal music, the festival ventures into exciting new territory in 2018 with music from other countries. The opening concert, Anno Domini 1611, captures a splendid year in music and theatre, featuring works by Gesualdo, Monteverdi, and Byrd, along with readings from Shakespeare’s Tempest. This chamber concert will take place 7:30 pm Friday, August 10th at The Old Church. The full schedule and details on tickets are available online at www.byrdfestival.org.
