Violinist Nelly Kovalev, originally from Ogre, Latvia, began her violin and piano studies at the Ogre School of Music at age six. Upon moving to the U.S. in 1992, she continued violin studies and received her Bachelors and Masters Degrees in music from Portland State University. Kovalev is the Concertmaster of the Oregon Ballet Theater Orchestra and a member of the Portland Opera Orchestra, the Eugene Symphony and a substitute with the Oregon Symphony. She will be joined by our resident pianist, Susan McDaniel on a program sampling Samuel Barber’s Violin Concerto, among other delights. Nelly and Susan will be joined by Portland-based cellist and music educator Diane Chaplin, as well as 16 year old Samuel Zacharia, a violist and one of this year’s MetroArts Young Artists Debut! winners.
