Come experience our second Festival weekend on Saturday, August 9th and Sunday, August 10th in Sokol Blosser’s beautiful tasting room, located in Dayton, OR! We are bringing back two favorites by Akshaya Tucker: Breathing Sunlight, her beautiful meditation on deeply experiencing a moment with someone close to you; and In Whose Mouth, the Stars, her musical telling of an ancient Indian story of the cosmos. The program concludes with a new gem by young Iranian American Kian Ravaei, and Schubert’s soulful blend of optimism and gravity, his beloved “Death and The Maiden” quartet.

Admission includes a complementary three wine tasting specially paired to the musical program. Following the concert, food and additional wine will be available for purchase to enjoy on the winery grounds.

PORTLAND, OR – Chicano rocker Joshua Josué announces the release of his debut full-length album, Beneath the Sand, on August 9 through Electric CholoLand Records.

A sweeping, bilingual journey through grief, love, and transformation, the album melds Americana, roots-rock, and Latin folk across twelve deeply personal tracks inspired by his travels through Mexico, Central America, and the American West.

Produced at the solar-powered Goat Mountain Recording Studio near Joshua Tree, the record features a powerhouse lineup of collaborators, including Roly Salley (The Chris Isaak Band), Steve Berlin (Los Lobos), Mitch Marine (Dwight Yoakam), Joel Guzmán (Los Super Seven), and members of The Old 97’s.

The cinematic title track, co-written with Salley and Grammy-winning producer Ben Rice, captures the emotional weight and poetic grit of the record. From the desert-fueled energy of “Bogart & Me” to the tender bilingual ballad “La Chica Me Cantó,” each song paints a vivid chapter of Joshua’s nomadic and multicultural life.

With lyrics in both Spanish and English, Beneath the Sand reflects Joshua’s West Coast upbringing, Chicano identity, and reverence for artists like John Prine, Vicente Fernández, and Enrique Bunbury. Two songs from the album are already under GRAMMY consideration.

“This album is about the places we run to, the people we meet there, and the truths we uncover beneath the surface,” says Josué. “Beneath the Sand is where my story lives.”

This program highlights the three most central composers in the musical life of Leipzig, Germany. The concert opens with Schumann’s lively Manfred Overture followed by Mendelssohn’s popular Violin Concerto performed by Concertmaster Yi Zhao. The second half is all Bach, including an arrangement of the Toccata and Fugue (famous from Fantasia) and Orchestral Suite No. 3 (with Air on the G String).

Born in Henan, China, Sunriver Music Festival Concertmaster Yi Zhao joined the Colorado Symphony as Assistant Concertmaster in 2014. Since joining the Symphony, Zhao has taken active roles to enrich the musical culture of Colorado, performing as a solo artist with regional orchestras and frequently featured as chamber musician. She also performs with the Grand Teton Music Festival Orchestra in the summers.

Portland Opera is partnering with Portland Parks for their Summer Free for All: Lunch + Play program to bring Building Block of Opera to children and families in select area parks!

Building Blocks of Opera programs introduce audiences in a fun and interactive way to elements that make an opera! Learn about arias, recitative, ensembles, voice types, and how the orchestra helps tell the story!

Inspired by Portland’s food cart culture, Opera a la Cart is a mobile performance venue that brings live opera performance directly into the community spaces where people gather. Designed and built by architecture students at Portland State University, the cart features a fold-out stage and a “menu” of operatic specials of the day to be sung by local artists.

The poignant quirk of Caroline Shaw’s Entr’acte creates an intriguing bridge into Shelley Washington’s groovy celebration of family, Middleground. The final performances of the 2024 Festival will take place on Saturday, August 16th and Sunday, August 17th in the magical acoustic of Archery Summit’s barrel caves. This program begins with Akshaya Tucker’s haunting Hollow Flame, a thoughtful look at the power of West Coast wildfires. The poignant quirk of Caroline Shaw’s Entr’acte creates an intriguing bridge into Shelley Washington’s groovy celebration of family, Middleground. Villa Catalana Cellars presents a magical summer evening of opera, and dinner in the gardens of Villa Catalana Cellars August 17th. Field and Vine Events will create a five course farm to table family style dinner and Ping and Woof Opera will sing your favorite opera arias between courses and after desert. The setting is under the big grape arbor at the lake’s edge with the 12th century inspired stone Spanish villa as a back drop.

Puccini’s Nessum Dorma will be performed along with works by Verdi, Offenbach, Thomas, Donizetti and Bizet. Many people in the past have said this is the highlight of their summer.
