Reprise Choir Sings presents “The Voice of Washington,” a series of concerts celebrating music by Washington composers and performers to be performed in Camas and Vancouver, including a world debut and an arrangement of Grammy-winning artist Brandi Carlile.
Inspired by the wealth of choral music created by composers from across the Evergreen State, directors Janet Reiter and April Duvic, along with the singers of Reprise Choir, have prepared a rich tapestry of songs displaying the incredible talents of some of our state’s finest composers.
The concert promises to be a feast for both eyes and ears, showcasing choral music, visual art, and dance, as well as including the audience in the performance. Art created by Reprise Choir soprano Jeanine Clark, a local artist and educator, and others will be exhibited. Dancers from Carla Kendall-Bray’s Dance Fusion Northwest dance school will be featured while the choir’s treble voices perform “She Was Dancing” by Tri-Cities composer Reginald Unterseher.
On March 23 and 24, the choir will perform an arrangement of “The Story,” a song off the album of the same name that brought Carlile to acclaim when it was featured on a 2007 episode of “Grey’s Anatomy.”
Reprise Choir will perform the world premiere of “Celebrate Time” by Martin Ellis, a professional organist and music director at Vancouver First United Methodist Church, with text by Reprise singer Amber Tripp.
The series of performances includes compositions by four professors of music: Dr. Donald Appert of Clark College; Dr. Giselle Wyers, University of Washington; Vijay Singh of Central Washington University; and Kirk Marcy of Edmonds College.
Other Washington composers include John Muehleisen; Daniel Schreiner; Karen Thomas, Jason Saunders, Bronwyn Edwards, Judith Herrington, and Melinda Bargreen from the Seattle/Tacoma region, and Judy Rose from Vancouver.
The repertoire in the series was selected to match the mission of the Reprise Choir, which is to present singers, audiences, and community with a wide variety of choral music at the highest artistic level, and to collaborate with student musicians, encouraging them to pursue music throughout their lifetime.

“In January 2021 when Covid was still holding the world in shut down mode and choirs everywhere were trying to figure out how to bring music to the world again, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to join Reprise as they raised their voices in a virtual choir. We needed to make music together in a world gone quiet. The vision of our directors continues to amaze and inspire me, and I am grateful and honored to be singing with this wonderfully talented group of musicians!” Soprano, Lonnie Lathrop.
Jeffrey Cannon, owner/operator of Masterthinkers in Vancouver, joined the ensemble this year. “I have been incredibly lucky to find Reprise Choir,” Cannon said. “It is easy to get lost in the busyness of everyday life, and every rehearsal brings me to a calm center. Listening to the sound surrounding me each time we sing immediately transports me to a tranquil place. The incredible professionalism and musicality of all involved is what creates this impressive experience.”
“I appreciate how Reprise focuses on a lifelong appreciation of music by reaching out to area schools for collaborative concerts every season. My love for choral music blossomed during middle and high school. What I remember most about those days were the outreach events like performing during the holidays at SeaTac airport, traveling on bus tours to Canada and singing in multi-generational concerts. In fifty years, I want our future Reprise members to reminisce fondly about the choir adventures that influenced their decisions to participate in this group.” Retired VPS choir teacher, Katie Hebner.
“Reprise Choir is a highlight of my life. Conductors Janet Reiter and April Duvic, two highly talented pianists in their own right {who have been friends and colleagues for over twenty years) bring out the best in all thirty-six of us. I and four others sing 2nd bass, and we love to hit all those low notes that are favorites to most audiences. Don’t miss out, mark your calendar for March 20th, 23rd or 24th for a night you won’t forget!” First year member, Jim Galbraith.

How do we transform and transcend loss as we grieve? The violinist and composer Curtis Stewart spent four years caring for his cancer-stricken mother, a composer and violinist herself. His latest album, of Love., is a personal requiem and tender tribute to his mother’s memory. This concert brings together excerpts from Stewart’s album and Grieg’s buoyant yet nostalgic Holberg Suite, and also features Missy Mazzoli’s gothic and shadowy violin concerto, Dark with Excessive Bright.
Curtis Stewart’s was hailed by The New York Times as “a giant…combining omnivory and brilliance.” A fierce advocate for other living composers, Stewart was recently appointed artistic director of American Composers Orchestra.

Under the Artistic Direction of Susan Dorn, and accompanied by pianist/composer Ben Milstein, the music of Satori Men’s Chorus will dazzle, some will stun, some will definitely make you stop and think, some will take you to a place you may not wish to go … but Satori Men’s Chorus will always leave you with the reassurance that peace is possible, so long as we are willing to work for it together. The songs of Satori will bring you hope and unite us with the power of peace.
Revel in the melodies and words of Ysaye Barnwell, Barak Obama, John Lennon, Francis of Assisi, Pete Seeger, Alfred Lord Tennyson, Hillel the Elder, and more. The contributors and creators of Satori’s music are varied and wide-ranging. But all of the music has one goal in mind: to encourage us to live in peace and harmony, no matter what life may throw at us. Satori’s music allows us to know that we are resilient and capable of overcoming any challenge that comes our way.
Satori is not alone in this vision of peace. Many others stand beside us and recognize this need for a united front for a peaceful unity. Indeed, there is a continued need for the idea of Men Singing Peace. Recognize the joy of a “Satori Moment”, which is defined as “a fleeting yet transformational moment of enlightenment; an extraordinary experience of grace, wonder and mystery”.

On Sunday, March 24 the Salem Symphonic Winds will present a musical journey to the Middle East, featuring the world premiere of band arrangement of The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyam by Alan Hovhaness, and arranged by our Artistic Director, John Skelton. The work features a solo accordion and the narration of poetry attributed to Omar Khayyam (1048-1131), dubbed “The Astronomer-Poet of Persia.” This performance will feature accordion soloist Tommy Thompson and narrator Rebecca Fromherz.
The 3 pm concert will be in Rose Auditorium at South Salem High School.
The program will include a rich variety of music inspired by the history and cultures of the Middle East. Arrangements by Alfred Reed will include the Theme from Maurice Jarre’s film score for Lawrence of Arabia and a suite of Armenian Dances by Gomidas Vartabed. Julie Giroux’s Of Blood and Stone: The Pyramids of Giza uses the tonality and scales found on the ancient instruments of Egypt for a dramatic journey back in time. Johan de Meij’s arrangement of five Klezmer Classics celebrates the traditional music of the Yiddish-speaking Jews of Eastern Europe for weddings and parties. Three selections from the opera stage will round out the program. The Overture from Nabucco by Giuseppe Verdi dramatically depicts the saga of the Jews as they were assaulted, conquered, and subsequently exiled from their homeland by the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar II. Rebecca Fromherz will sing the Air de Salome from the opera Herodiade by Jules Massenet. The aria offers a different perspective of the biblical tale as Salomé sings of her love for Jean (John the Baptist.) Fromherz will also sing the beautiful aria from the opera Die tote Stadt, Glück das mir verblieb, which speaks to the joy of love while acknowledging its impermanence.
“The concert will present musical drama, beauty, and a unique perspective from various Middle Eastern cultures. At a time when the news media focuses on wars and conflict between people and cultures, we bring you a celebration of history, cultures, and beauty. We bring you poetry, dances, and drama. Music allows us to celebrate what we share in common as we honor diverse cultures,” said the director, John Skelton.

ON THIS ALL-PREMIERE PROGRAM:
Gustavo Ramírez Sansano – The Spanish choreographer and former Artistic Director of Luna Negra Dance Theater in Chicago makes his NW Dance Project live debut with a new work that reflects and celebrates NW Dance Project’s two decades of work and varied creations. A colorful and dynamic full-company piece set to the iconic music of Mozart and featuring a sublime set from Spanish designer Luis Crespo (who conceived and created the sets for our smash hit “Carmen”), experience “a celebration of the City of Roses and of life expressed through the art of dance.”
Nicole von Arx, a Swiss & British performer and choreographer based in New York City since 2008, is also creating with NW Dance Project for the first time. She is crafting a full-company, 20+ minute work veering into the realm of dance theater. Focused on the theme of power, the new creation delves into the intricate dynamics between people and explores the juxtaposition of human power versus the forces of nature. The work will blend choreography, musicality, and theatricality to emphasize the dichotomy of “I vs. them” and “us vs. it.” Get ready for a highly physical and dynamic work, employing minimalist stage design and props, with touches of sly humor.
Joseph Hernandez has created eight original works for NW Dance Project and was named Associate Choreographer in 2022. His latest piece, created on five female dancers (Quincie Bean, Ingrid Ferdinand, Nicole Hennington, Alejandra Preciado, and Lucia Tozzi), each with a very distinctive personality (“a mix of cabaret performers and survivors of a natural disaster”). Tentatively titled “Fistful of Love”, the 20+ minute work is “centered around the exploration of dance as a space for unimaginable shifts in practice” and “focuses on the individual performers and the histories that lie in their bodies.” Having previously wildly re-told the classical ballet tale of “Petrushka”, Joseph is focusing on “themes of global warming, love, grief, and hope, with the goal of reflecting the whiplash we’ve witnessed living under a confluence of oppressive systems, at increasingly unsure times.”

✨Purpose and Intention✨
The purpose of this gathering is to create a safe, nourishing space for us to support each other communaly through singing and movement practices. In the face of so much global and personal grief, our intention is to create a container where we all feel welcome and accepted exactly as we are… with our sadness, grief, pain, and anger, along with our joy, connectedness, love, and laughter.
