The Rosebud String Quartet; Cary Lewis & Friends

August 7, 2025: Host Christa Wessel welcomes the Rosebud String Quartet with clarinetist James Shields; and Cary Lewis and friends to All Classical Radio’s Irving Levin Performance Hall.

The Rosebud String Quartet presents music by Hayden and von Weber. They’ll be joined by clarinetist James Shields on Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet: Adagio. Then, violinists Inés Voglar Belgique and Lucia Atkinson; violist Maia Hoffman; and cellist Nancy Ives join pianist Cary Lewis to perform music by Peter Schickele.

ABOUT

The Rosebud String Quartet is made up of violinists Aaron Schwebel and Sheila Jaffé; violist Keith Hamm; and cellist Leana Rutt. The Quartet was formed in 2013 in Rosebud, Alberta, at the inaugural Rosebud Chamber Music Festival.

RSQ members had their chamber music education at the Domaine Forget, where individually they performed with members of the London Haydn Quartet, Chilingirian Quartet, the Smithsonian Chamber Players, and many others.

Clarinetist James Shields is one half of All Classical Radio’s 2025/26 Artists in Residence, along with his wife, violinist Emily Cole.

James joined the Oregon Symphony in 2016 after holding similar positions in the Canadian Opera Company and the New Mexico Philharmonic. A Juilliard graduate, he has appeared as soloist with the Oregon Symphony, New Mexico Philharmonic, and Music in the Mountains (CO), and has performed as guest principal clarinet of the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Malaysian Philharmonic. Pianist Cary Lewis is in constant demand as a collaborative pianist for soloists and chamber music groups. With his wife, cellist Dorothy Lewis, he joins Cleveland Orchestra concertmaster William Preucil to form the Lanier Trio, acclaimed for beloved television performances. Their CD of the complete Dvořák Trios was honored by Time as among the Ten Best Recordings in 1993.

Recently retired from the faculty of Georgia State University, he is now based in Portland. In recent years he has participated in festivals throughout the United States and Turkey, with concerts in Australia, Southeast Asia, and South America.
