Tchaikovsky’s Passion: A Symphony of Longing

The 43rd season of the Beaverton Symphony Orchestra begins with a monument of the Romantic period and arguably one of the most emotionally powerful works of orchestral writing ever penned to paper. Tchaikovsky’s Pathétique—his sixth and final symphony—is suffused with passion and teeming with lively virtuosity and sweeping lyricism. Those who enjoy the Romanticism of Tchaikovsky’s other symphonies, ballets, and overtures will be moved… maybe to tears. While Tchaikovsky is known for wearing his heart on his sleeve, in the Pathétique he throws his heart into the crowd, laying bare every emotion in its unforgettable final moments.

The concert will also include Bedřich Smetana’s iconic depiction of the largest river in the Czech Republic, The Moldau. Painting with sound, Smetana carries us down the river passing through forests, meadows, a country wedding, dancing mermaids, and ancient ruins overlooking its banks.

Two brief tone poems by Anatol Liadov will kick off this season-opening concert inspired by two legendary figures from Slavic folklore: the fearsome witch Baba Yaga and the mysterious spirit Kikimora.
