International Guitar Night is the world’s premier touring guitar festival, each show bringing together the most exciting and innovative acoustic guitarists to exchange musical ideas in a public concert setting. For each tour, IGN founder Brian Gore brings together a new cast of guitar luminaries for special evenings of solos, duets, and quartets that highlight the talent and diversity within the world of acoustic guitar. Brian founded IGN in 1995 as a forum for the world’s finest guitarists/composers to play their latest original songs and share musical ideas and talent with their peers.
The 23rd Anniversary North American Tour of International Guitar Night features Stephanie Jones (Classical), Jocelyn Gould (Jazz), Olli Soikelli (Gypsy Jazz), and Jesus Guererro (Flamenco).

In early February, the Portland Winter Light Festival returns to the city. This time, attendees will be treated to a magical, ephemeral experience of music in a most unexpected location. Visitors to PSU’s Urban Plaza will be able to look up from the street to see (and hear) a giant color video projection of acclaimed violinist Tomás Cotik, professor of violin at the School of Music & Theater, playing selections by Bach, Telemann, Piazzolla, and Tárrega.
The project, which runs Feb. 3-5, is titled “Ombra Musici II” (“musician’s shadow” in Italian), and is the result of a collaboration between Cotik and Dave Colangelo, a professor of digital creation and communication at Ryerson University. The team received a National Endowment for the Arts grant to produce the project, which expands on “Ombra Musici,” presented at the 2019 Portland Winter Light Festival, where moving silhouettes of musicians were projected onto the PSU Library facade.
“Life has been radically altered by the effects of the pandemic,” says Cotik, who notes that, while arts activities in particular were halted during COVID-19, the human need for catharsis, comfort, and entertainment only grew. With this project, Cotik aims to surprise and delight viewers with a performance of classical music that can be experienced alone or in communion with other festival-goers—offering a moment of beauty and solace at the darkest time of winter.
“I am convinced that as musicians, an important responsibility lies in our involvement with our community, passing on our passion, and giving back,” says Cotik. “For him, the project embodies of PSU’s motto—Let knowledge serve the city—by sharing the beauty and healing qualities of music with Portland and its citizens. —Hispanic Magazine
Latin jazz vocalist Jessie Marquez blends Cuban, Brazilian, jazz, and pop sounds in duos with lush harmonies and cool grooves. Her duo performance with pianist Clay Giberson combines songs and stories with loving and longing themes that reflect Marquez’s “cool and inviting” style (The Urban Flux). In a rare mega-concert event, the “technically flawless and deeply expressive” (The New York Times) cellist Alisa Weilerstein, performs all six of Bach’s powerfully moving Cello Suites in a single concert. Weilerstein — featured in our 2020-21 virtual concerts — is known for her commanding performances of cello repertoire classics, and this intimate solo cello feat of musicianship is of epic proportions. This exciting music marathon will have an early start time, and an extended intermission with rejuvenating sustenance and libations before embarking on the second half.
“An exceptional cellist and distinguished musician…Weilerstein has carefully considered the path through these works, finding a magnitude of emotion. Weilerstein’s contemporary approach is respectful of the Baroque origins but brings a highly expressive performance.”

Being famous is sometimes a burning desire from a young age. And sometimes, it’s an accident. In either case, fame teaches you things—about yourself, about hard work, about enjoyment, about pride, and about your impact on the world and others. From humble beginnings to adoring fans to looking back on achievements and lessons learned, we chart the course of celebrity through the correspondence of luminaries like Stephen King, Andy Warhol (of course!), Elvis Presley, Emily Dickinson, Bruce Lee, Marilyn Monroe, and Tom Hanks. Get a new perspective on fame from the famous in our most popular show!
Real letters by real people, read by great actors. Letters Aloud was founded in 2013 by Paul Morgan Stetler as a way to connect a live audience to famous (and infamous) historical figures through their intimate personal correspondence. Each show brings together letters from every era, curated to explore a central theme. Sounds academic—but the way we do it, it’s addictive. As one fan said, “It’s like literary crack.” With live musical accompaniment and a dynamic slide show, a Letters Aloud evening is guaranteed to inspire!

Celebrated for their powerful, athletic style that reveals relatable, abstract storylines, push/FOLD creates dance “filled with vulnerability and humanity… full of nuances and beauty.” (Oregon ArtsWatch) The shining star of this program is an ethereal and moody piece that explores themes of home, acceptance, and belonging through high-impact and sweeping movement, floorwork, and dynamic partnering. Also on the program is Wolf, a mesmerizing duet set to heartfelt vocals expressing a loneliness and perseverance that evolves into tranquility and empowerment. Rounding all this out is the comedic noir, Dark Wings, an ode to jazz that tells the story of an isolated creature that transcends its life, guided and carried away by three friendly spirits.
This is a rare opportunity to take in the breadth and depth and push/FOLD’s impressive and moving work! February 24 & 25 at 7:30pm; February 26 at 4pm at the Patricia Reser Center for the Arts in Beaverton.

Show-Length: ~95 minutes with intermission
Artist talks and Q&A follow each performance.
