Get in the holiday spirit with the Oregon Mandolin Orchestra Holiday Concert, featuring the time-honored “musical gingerbread cookies” sure to take you back to memories of Christmas Past.
“OMO will conclude their 15th anniversary year with a pair of Christmas concerts spanning music from the 17th century to the 1960s, from the Baroque-era German Lutheran church to the American silver screen,” said Christian McKee, OMO music director.
“This year, there will be a special stocking stuffer,” McKee said, “The concerts will include performances by the OMO Chamber Ensemble, playing perennial favorite themes from Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker.”
As promised, the full orchestra’s concert program includes Ding Dong Merrily on High, a tune with French roots dating back to the 16th century. Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring, part of a J.S. Bach cantata, and Petersburger Schlittenfahrt were composed in the 1700s and 1800s, respectively.
A more contemporary favorite, Beautiful Star of Bethlehem, was composed in 1938, followed by Irving Berlin’s White Christmas (1942) and The Christmas Song (1945).
Turn the calendar ahead for Jingle Bell Rock, released by Bobby Helms in 1957, followed by Holly Jolly Christmas (1964).
Suggested donation: $15 for adults; $10 for students and seniors through online link.
