Can a symphony orchestra inspire vivid images of a brisk journey across a frozen landscape? Much of the music in our Christmas program aims to do just that, beginning with Leroy Anderson’s joyful holiday season classic. The piece captures the spirit of snowy winter fun in every detail, from gently rising melodies and consistently lively rhythms to the unmistakable sounds of a horse-drawn sleigh.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s lively interpretation of the sleigh ride first appeared in a set of German dances. The piece opens in the characteristic style of an 18th-century dance before tuned sleigh bells and brass transport listeners into a wintry atmosphere.
Sergei Prokofiev’s “Lieutenant Kije Suite”, released in 1934, was one of the first sound films produced in the USSR (available on YouTube as
“The Czar Wants to Sleep”). Set in the late 18th century, the plot is a tale reminiscent of The Emperor’s New Clothes.
Rounding out the program is George’s Bizet’s “L’Arlesienne Suites Nos. 1 and 2” (The Girl from Arles) with brilliant orchestration, and captivating melodies that often recall folk music, and stirring dance-based rhythms.
Come early for the conductor, Jonathan DeBruyn’s, interesting and fun pre-concert talk at 3:00-3:30PM. Stay for an uplifting concert and warm yourself with friendship and food at the reception with the musicians afterwards.
