Pianist, composer, and yoga instructor Liz Kohl will be premiering her first album of original music for solo piano and songs for voice & piano. Spanning years of musical reflection before and during the pandemic, you are welcomed to come and share in these pieces of love, grief, meditation, healing, and celebration! Liz will be joined by dear friends & esteemed local Portland musicians across multiple genres & instruments: Viveka Stuhlbarg, Jonathan Gray, Tim Lafolette, Angelica Hesse, Adam Eason, Bill Hoelzer & more.
With an extensive background as a classically trained pianist (Bachelor of Arts in Music, Master of Music in Piano Performance/Pedagogy & current adjunct faculty at Portland State University teaching ‘Yoga for Musicians’) and two decades of experience as a collaborative musician and piano instructor, Liz hopes to bridge the gap between musical artistry and the emotional connection we all share with each other through themes including love, betrayal, forgiveness, hope, healing, and delighting in our weirdness! Come celebrate this album release which will also double as an early birthday celebration for this local composer who shares a birthday with International Women’s Day! (March 8th)

Event Details
Hailed by The New York Times as “invariably energetic and finely burnished…playing with earthy vigor,” the Grammy Award-winning Catalyst Quartet was founded by the internationally acclaimed Sphinx Organization, which is dedicated to transforming lives through the power of diversity in the arts. Catalyst combines a serious commitment to diversity, education, and contemporary works with virtuosic playing “reminiscent of great quartets of the past such as the Guarneri and Budapest” (Richmond Times). In this concert, CMNW’s 2022-23 Artists-in-Residence will continue their celebration of music by Black composers with selections from the quartet’s acclaimed multi-volume anthology of albums, UNCOVERED, that highlight masterworks by classical composers previously overlooked because of their race or gender.
“Like all great chamber groups, the Catalyst Quartet is beautiful to watch, like a family in lively conversation at the dinner table: anticipating, interrupting, changing subjects.”
