Mark O’Connor began his creative journey at the feet of American fiddling legend Benny Thomasson, and the iconic French jazz violinist Stéphane Grappelli. Today, he has melded these influences into a new American classical music, and is perpetuating his vision of an American School of String Playing. Mr. O’Connor has won three Grammys, seven CMA awards and several national fiddle, guitar and mandolin champion titles. Mr. O’Connor has composed nine concertos and two symphonies recorded by the Baltimore Symphony, London Philharmonic, Colorado Symphony among others. O’Connor is well-known for his chamber music including his million-selling composition “Appalachia Waltz” featuring Yo-Yo Ma for the Sony Classical label. His recent album back on his own label OMAC Records is Life After Life, an Americana music collection of his original songs and some classics he sings with his wife Maggie O’Connor who is featured on lead vocals. 2025 sees the release of their new holiday music album, A Christmas Du0 – captured live at Sheldon Hall in St. Louis from Mark’s perennial An Appalachian Christmas tour. O’Connor released his memoir a few years ago, Crossing Bridges: My Journey from Child Prodigy to Fiddler Who Dared the World.
Mr. O’Connor has authored a series of educational books called the O’Connor Method and is now the fastest growing violin method in the country. The O’Connor Method features American music styles, creativity, cultural diversity and western classical technical training. For more information, visit www.markoconnor.com.
American violinist/fiddler and vocalist, Maggie O’Connor performs a variety of musical styles throughout the U.S. and beyond, most recently as a member of the Grammy award-winning bluegrass group, the O’Connor Band. She spends most of her time now performing with her husband, violinist and composer Mark O’Connor. Together they have appeared as guest soloists with the Charlotte Symphony, Singapore Chinese Orchestra, Santa Rosa Symphony, Nashville Symphony, Oklahoma City Philharmonic, Winston Salem Symphony, with Wynton Marsalis and Jazz at Lincoln Center, and appeared in violin duo performances in such prestigious settings as the Yehudi Menuhin Centennial celebration at the Berlin Konzerthaus, the Lockenhaus, Austria Musikfest, and the Leopold Auer Festival in Hungary. In an Americana duo setting, the couple tours music from their new album, Life After Life, a collection of original songs and classics. Her latest album is A Christmas Duet, a live-in-concert album from their annual An Appalachian Christmas tour. Along with performing, Maggie continues to work as co-director with Mr. O’Connor at O’Connor Method String Camp currently taking place in Charlotte, NC featuring the lesson book series that is rising in popularity each year.

In the fall of 2006 a group of 9 cellists got on stage at Portland’s Doug Fir Lounge to perform western classical music in an informal setting.
Many of the cellists that night thought that was a fun one-off gig.
But the energy of the night carried on, and Portland Cello Project quickly evolved into a nationally-recognized performing, recording and educational group touring everywhere in North America, performing in every type of venue imaginable, from punk rock clubs to symphony halls, to street parties, to TED Talks and exclusive private events, collaborating and/or touring with everyone from Buckethead to Peter Yarrow (Peter Paul and Mary) to Trampled by Turtles to The Dandy Warhols to Corin Tucker and Janet Weiss (Sleater-Kinney), longstanding collaborations with Prince alumni Tyrone Hendrix and Saeeda Wright, and alongside cellists such as Zoe Keating and Ben Solee.
The Cello Project’s three-part philosophy for the group that has mostly remained its unchanged north star over the years is:
1: To bring the cello places you wouldn’t normally see it
2: To perform music on the cello you wouldn’t normally associate with the instrument
3: To build bridges between different musical communities through collaborations and community outreach

Ruth Moody is an award-winning singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist hailing from Winnipeg, Manitoba. Her otherworldly soprano voice and her inspired songwriting have gained the admiration of the hearts, minds, and ears of millions of listeners. As a solo artist and a founding and current member of The Wailin’ Jennys, she has garnered two JUNO Awards and performed to rapt audiences in sold-out venues around the globe.
Now in its seventh year, PRAx and the College of Liberal Arts at Oregon State University present American Strings, a series of conversations and intimate performances with iconic musicians from the Americas whose perspectives shape our world. Prior guests have included Keb’ Mo’, Rosanne Cash, esperanza spalding, and many more.
Hosted by ethnomusicologist and public historian Kelly Bosworth, American Strings performances offer audiences the chance to hear artists play and reflect on their practice. In conversation, artists discuss process, biography, and the themes of their work. Conversation is followed by musical performance. Guests typically perform unaccompanied, but in select cases may appear with their ensembles.
Dr. Kelly Bosworth is Mary Jones and Thomas Hart Horning Assistant Professor of Public History and Ethnomusicology at Oregon State University, where she teaches courses such as “Social Change and American Popular Music” and “Musical Worlds of the Pacific Northwest.” She works at the intersection of sound, place, and belonging. Her research on music/sound/noise in U.S. history delves into the diverse archives of musicmaking, reconstructing often-silenced histories through the songs and sounds associated with place. Her PhD dissertation (Indiana University, 2024) explored “The Music of Miracle City: Vanport, Oregon and the Sonic Imaginaries of Multiracial Democracy.”

Acclaimed nature writer Robert Macfarlane proclaimed that “if snow could sing, it would sing like Julie Fowlis.” Hailing from the Outer Hebrides and now based in the Highlands, Julie Fowlis is a multi-award winning singer whose music is deeply influenced by the Hebridean islands where she grew up and by the Highland landscapes where she now resides. Voted Musician of the Year at the Scots Trad Music Awards 2023, and with a career spanning several studio albums and numerous high profile collaborations, her ‘crystalline’ and ‘intoxicating’ vocals have enchanted audiences around the world.
She will forever be recognized for singing the theme songs to Brave, Disney Pixar’s Oscar, Golden Globe and BAFTA winning animated film, set in the ancient highlands of Scotland. One of these songs was long-listed for an Oscar. A winner of ‘Folk Singer of the Year’ at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, Julie has graced stages around the world, from village halls in the Highlands to Carnegie Hall in New York, the Mozart Concert Hall in Vienna, The Philharmonie de Paris, Shakespeare’s Globe in London and the World Festival of Sacred Music in Fez, Morocco. She has collaborated with the BBC Concert Orchestra in the Royal Albert Hall for the Proms, sang live at the closing ceremony of the Ryder Cup in Chicago in 2012 to a TV audience of 500 million, an event that was only eclipsed by singing live at the opening ceremony of the Glasgow XX Commonwealth Games in 2014, to a TV audience of over 1 billion. Her voice has been streamed on Spotify alone over 200 million times, and has been heard in space on an official NASA astronaut playlist. She even has a lily flower named after her.
She was vocal coach for the Eric Whitacre Singers on the Dreamworks Animation How To Train Your Dragon 3: The New World (Cressida Cowell, score by John Powell) in Abbey Road Studios, London in 2018. She is also an artist with a genuine curiosity and ability for cross-over, and regularly sings and records in other languages. She currently performs and records with the folk ‘supergroup’ Spell Songs. A natural collaborator, she has performed with artists such as James Taylor, KT Tunstall, Chris Thile, Graham Coxon, Bill Whelan (Riverdance), electronica duo Valtos, Tommy Smith and the Scottish Jazz Orchestra, Nicola Benedetti, the Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Mary Chapin Carpenter. On June 5th 2024 she closed the official D-Day 80 Commemorations in Portsmouth, England with a live BBC TV performance of The Parting Glass with full orchestra and spectacular drone light show.

Artina McCain, Piano
This extraordinary program presents a work of the powerful, contemporary voice of composer Carlos Simon, whose works resonate with history, hope, and heart. Pianist Artina McCain returns to perform George Gershwin’s brilliant Piano Concerto in F, a work that blends classical traditions with the bold rhythms of jazz and pulses with energy, romance, and the unmistakable spirit of the American Jazz Age. The program closes with Peter Boyer’s Ellis Island: Dream of America, a poignant and inspiring tribute to the immigrants who shaped the American story. Innovative in its format, the work brings elements of the theater and multimedia into the concert hall, employing actors and projected historical images from the Ellis Island archives. The spoken texts for the work come from the Ellis Island Oral History Project, an historic collection of interviews with actual immigrants about their experiences emigrating to America. This dynamic work reminds us of the hopes, struggles, and dreams that built a nation.
