Taking our inspiration from the world around us, PCSO features Concertmaster Casey Bozell in a sublime work by 20th Century English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams. The program includes the evocative Yakona by Sara Carina Graef, an homage to the Yaqo’n Indian tribe of Oregon, accompanied by images of the Yakona Nature Preserve and oyster-rich Yaquina Bay. Ludwig van Beethoven’s ode to the natural world, his exquisite Symphony No. 6 (the Pastoral), with its themes of harmony and idealism as personified by nature, anchors this concert of unfolding wonder. As Beethoven himself phrased it: “Surely woods, trees, and rocks produce the echo that man desires to hear.”

How do we transform and transcend loss as we grieve? The violinist and composer Curtis Stewart spent four years caring for his cancer-stricken mother, a composer and violinist herself. His latest album, of Love., is a personal requiem and tender tribute to his mother’s memory. This concert brings together excerpts from Stewart’s album and Grieg’s buoyant yet nostalgic Holberg Suite, and also features Missy Mazzoli’s gothic and shadowy violin concerto, Dark with Excessive Bright.
Curtis Stewart’s was hailed by The New York Times as “a giant…combining omnivory and brilliance.” A fierce advocate for other living composers, Stewart was recently appointed artistic director of American Composers Orchestra.

Oregon Repertory Singers and Youth Choir join with Portland Youth Philharmonic for a profound reflection on life, meaning, and the search for light in the darkest of times with two stunning works for choir and orchestra.
Oregon Repertory Singers concludes their 50th season with Finding Light, a new work for choir and orchestra by Filipino-American composer Matthew Lyon Hazzard. ORS commissioned Hazzard to write a complement to Lux Aeterna, commonly considered the most beautiful twentieth-century work for choir and orchestra, composed by National Medal of Arts winner and beloved Oregonian composer Morten Lauridsen. While Lauridsen’s oratorio approaches the theme of light from a religious perspective, Hazzard’s new work is the ideal companion piece to conclude the concert, with poems by young Chinese-American (and Portlandian!) poet Sophia Mautz about finding light in the darkest of times. Camerata from Portland Youth Philharmonic—celebrating their 100th Anniversary—is collaborating on this performance, along with members of ORS Youth Choir—celebrating 30 years this season! It’s a season of milestones! Join us for this celebration of light, life, and longevity!
