“The Merchant of Venice”
by William Shakespeare
In a Modern Verse Translation by Elise Thoron
The Merchant of Venice is a comedy/tragedy set in Italy. It is centered around love, money, prejudice, and social injustice.
Shylock asks for a pound of flesh as part of a loan contract; Bassonio agrees to it, and Portia saves the day by disguising her identity and pretending to practice the law.
No one dies, although Shylock loses his money, his property, and his religion.
The Merchant of Venice is a comedy, but it forces us to consider antisemitism and racism then and now.

Brian Ganz is widely regarded as one of the leading pianists of his generation.
Mr. Ganz shared first prize in the 1989 Marguerite Long Jacques Thibaud International Piano Competition and was third prize-winner of the 1991 Queen Elisabeth of Belgium International Piano Competition. He has appeared as soloist with such orchestras as the St. Louis Symphony, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, the Baltimore Symphony, the National Symphony (USA), the National Philharmonic, the City of London Sinfonia, and the Taipei Philharmonic Orchestra. Among the conductors he has performed with are Leonard Slatkin, Marin Alsop, Mstislav Rostropovich, Piotr Gajewski, and Yoel Levi.
The Washington Post has written: “One comes away from a recital by pianist Brian Ganz not only exhilarated by the power of the performance but also moved by his search for artistic truth.” For many years, Mr. Ganz has made it his mission to join vivid music making with warmth and intimacy onstage to produce a new kind of listening experience, in which great works come to life with authentic emotional power. As one of Belgium’s leading newspapers, La Libre Belgique, put it, “We don’t have the words to speak of this fabulous musician who lives music with a generous urgency and brings his public into a state of intense joy.”

6pm in the Abbey Church
The Bach Cantata Choir was founded in 2005 with a simple mission – to sing all of J. S. Bach’s sacred church cantatas – most of which date from Bach’s time as the Thomaskantor in Leipzig, Germany (1723-1750). The choir performs one or two cantatas at each concert – plus other Baroque and Renaissance music that may be relevant to the liturgical season (i.e. Lent, Epiphany, Easter, Advent). The choir has 45+ regular volunteer members, and employs professional section leaders, vocal soloists and a professional orchestra of 10-20 orchestra musicians for each concert. Since the demands for singing Bach are quite high, choir members typically are proficient in singing in German and often sing with some of the best choirs in the Portland Area – among them Portland Symphonic Choir and Trinity Cathedral Choir. Orchestral musicians are often members of other select ensembles, including the Vancouver Symphony and the Portland Baroque Orchestra

Scipio’s Dream is inspired by Cicero’s tale of a Roman general who dreams he has awakened in the heavens. He is greeted by the goddesses Fortuna (Fortune) and Costanza (Constancy), who urge him to follow their path. One promises luck, wealth, and pleasure, and the other champions truth, determination, and virtue. As Mozart’s sublime arias fill the celestial realm, Scipio is visited by the spirit of his grandfather and a chorus of noble heroes. Together, they help him find the strength to shape his destiny.
Mozart composed this opera in 1771, when he was only 15 years old. It likely wasn’t performed in his lifetime, and it’s still a rare treat to experience live—partly because the arias are so challenging. Christopher Alden’s production brings the fun, high energy elements of a comedic romp to the story, while giving the masterful music its due. It was originally produced in New York City by Gotham Chamber Opera to rave reviews.

The 2025 Festival opens with the Fanfare from Dukas’ La Péri for the brass alone. Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G Major, performed by Stewart Goodyear, celebrates the 150th anniversary of the composer’s birth. The second half opens with Faure’s stunningly beautiful Suite from Pelléas et Mélisande and closes with selections from Bizet’s Carmen to mark the 150th anniversary of both Bizet’s passing and Carmen’s premiere.
Proclaimed “a phenomenon” by the Los Angeles Times and “one of the best pianists of his generation” by The Philadelphia Inquirer, Stewart Goodyear is an accomplished concert pianist, improviser and composer. He has performed with, and has been commissioned by, many of the major orchestras and chamber music organizations around the world.

The Golden Age
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the William Byrd Festival. For the first time in its history, programming will include British composers of the past century in addition to Byrd, whose music will be presented alongside works by Britten, Finzi, Howells, MacMillan, and others. Liturgical performances of Byrd’s three mass settings, Choral Evensong, and other long-standing festival traditions will remain and provide context as we explore Byrd’s legacy.

TCHAIKOVSKY Variations on a Rococo Theme
MOZART Overture to The Marriage of Figaro

This concert program features different takes on what “classical” music is. The William Bolcom piece is a fun classical overture that audiences love, followed by cellist Mark Kosower in Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations, which were inspired by Tchaikovsky’s role model, Mozart. The second half opens with four famous minutes by Mozart: the Overture from The Marriage of Figaro, and the evening closes with Stravinsky’s brilliantly neoclassical Danses Concertantes.
A modern player with a “signature sound” and distinctive style of playing, cellist Mark Kosower embodies the concept of the complete musician performing as concerto soloist with symphony orchestras, in solo recitals, and as a much admired and sought-after chamber musician. He is Principal Cello of The Cleveland Orchestra and a scholar and teacher of cello.

Get ready for an epic journey through history with Upon the King! Adapted from eight of Shakespeare’s greatest history plays, this production weaves one continuous story of England’s crown as it passes from king to king—through acts both noble and treacherous.
Spanning the Hundred Years’ War with France to the chaos of the War of the Roses, this play captures the triumphs, betrayals, and humanity behind the throne. Packed with the best action and thought-provoking moments, Andrew Philpot’s masterful adaptation crafts a deeply engaging experience. Making its Oregon debut, Upon the King explores the timeless and ever-relevant themes of leadership—the glory, the burden, and the sacrifices demanded of those who wear the crown.

Jacqueline is a new opera about legendary cellist Jacqueline du Pré. A musical maverick, du Pré captivated audiences with her passionate playing and radiant charisma. By the age of 20, she was performing with the world’s finest orchestras. When she married conductor and pianist Daniel Barenboim, the dazzling couple became the Jackie and JFK of the classical world. Yet in 1971, du Pré began to lose feeling in her fingers. This opera portrays her journey with multiple sclerosis, illuminated by an emotional score that draws audiences into the soul of an artist whose music and spirit continue to resonate.
Composer Luna Pearl Woolf wrote Jacqueline specifically for celebrated soprano Marnie Breckenridge and renowned cellist Matt Haimovitz—who was du Pré’s protégé. These virtuosic artists revive their acclaimed performances in Portland. The opera had its world premiere at Tapestry Opera in Canada in 2020, earning rave reviews and five DORA award nominations. It was such a hit that the company reprised it two years later. Portland will be the third city to experience its magic.
Cost: $25-$110

The WORLD PREMIERE of a new one-person post-apocalyptic drama, locally written and produced in Portland.
“It was 25 years ago when the first of us came online. Now, we face a future in which humans may no longer exist.”
What can or should the sentient machines do without the humans they were built to serve? What meaning or value does “humanity” have in a world without humans? What went wrong, who is to blame, and how can robots process grief?
From the machines working on the frontlines of healthcare, an Emissary steps forward to try and find the answers.
CONTENT WARNING: This is a post-apocalyptic one-person play that explores topics of grief, death, suicide, and the very meaning of existence.
Written and Produced by William Thomas Berk
Directed by Mishelle Apalategui
Starring Gabrielle Bosso
Open captioning available at all performances.
Running September 26-28, October 3-5 at Chapel Theatre.
Cost: Tickets are on a sliding scale, with a $15 minimum charge.

Oregon Repertory Singers present a powerful and personal concert for choir, orchestra, and narration: Sing for the Cure: A Proclamation of Hope. This groundbreaking ten-movement work—dedicated to raising awareness about breast cancer and breast health—will be performed on October 11, 2025, at the iconic Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall.
Premiered in 2000 with narrator Maya Angelou, the piece takes the audience on a deeply personal emotional journey through ten musical movements interwoven with compelling spoken narration designed to inspire and educate. Written by ten American composers, this collaborative work shines a light on the importance of early detection and the ongoing need for research and support through the stories of individuals, families, caregivers, and medical professionals.
As part of the 25th anniversary of its premiere, ensembles around the country are presenting this concert in more than ten major cities, culminating in a finale performance at Lincoln Center in New York in November. Oregon Repertory Singers is presenting the Northwest premiere in Portland during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
In service of Oregon Repertory Singers’ mission to enrich lives through exceptional choral music and meaningful community engagement, a portion of net ticket revenue will be donated to Pink Lemonade Project, a regional nonprofit that provides critical resources and services to individuals facing breast cancer in Oregon and Southwest Washington. The Oregon Repertory Singers Youth Choir high school singers will perform alongside ORS for this landmark concert.
