Piano Quintet “Trout”: IV. Theme and Variations, Franz Schubert

Suggested by Eleanor in Portland

Over the years when travelling from Portland to visit family in North Dakota, we always drove via Lewiston/Clarkston on Hwy #12 along the Lochsa & Clearwater rivers in Idaho. The scenery is beautiful and it is along part of the route taken by Lewis & Clark when they traveled to the Pacific. This music flows - just as the rivers do - sometimes smoothly and other times more roughly. The beauty of this region is quite breath-taking and we always have cherished the memory of it. We often stopped at sites designated as Lewis & Clark stopping places along the way, too! Such great memories!

Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage, Felix Mendelssohn

Suggested by Mae in Beaverton, Oregon

I just think this is one of the most beautiful pieces I have ever heard. The first time I heard it on All Classical, it brought me to tears. It's just so sweeping, BIG, uplifting, inspiring!!

Simple Song No. 3, David Lang

Suggested by Rosemary in Oregon

I've never listened to this piece without tears in my eyes. It is the closing music to an incredible movie called "Youth". I saw this movie in St Petersburg, Russia and as I walked out of the theater wiping my eyes, the young Russian woman next to me was doing the same and we laughed and hugged. It was a beautiful, unforgettable moment.

Star Wars: Princess Leia’s Theme, John Williams

Suggested by Kevin in Portland, Oregon

I’d love to hear John Williams’ sublime and rousing theme for Princess Leia in honor of Star Wars Day! May the Fourth be with you!

I Know That My Redeemer Liveth, Heinrich Schutz

Suggested by Pie in Portland, Oregon

I adore this lovely chorus and I know that other people would appreciate hearing it too. Very relaxing for that drive home.

Spirited Away: “One Summer’s Day”, Joe Hisaishi

Suggested by Lenny in Salem, Oregon

I played this piece with my high school orchestra during my final school concert. I really cherished the moment, performing with my classmates. It is such a beautiful song, and every time I listen to it I am reminded of the time I spent in school and orchestra.

Astor in Paris, 3 Leg Torso

Suggested by Anne in Portland, Oregon

3 Leg Torso is one of my favorite musical groups (and I take accordion lessons from Courtney Von Drehle). Everything they play is great entertainment - a musical cocktail for cocktail hour, as it were.

Karelia Suite: Alla marcia, Jean Sibelius

Suggested by Audrey in Medford, Oregon

My dad is a Sibelius fan. I was 9 years old the first time I remember him introducing me to this work. This movement stood out to me and I always associate it with my dad. The pandemic has kept me from visiting him, but when I listen to this piece I feel like we're in the same room again.

Rusalka: Song to the Moon, Antonin Dvorak

Suggested by Mary in Portland, Oregon

This is a perfect suggestion for April 27th because there is a full moon then! This lovely piece was Renee Fleming's selection for the Metropolitan Opera auditions which launched her career, and Rusalka became one of her signature roles. Rusalka has been one of my favorite operas as I have watched the nightly opera broadcasts which the Met generously made available for free during the pandemic.

Songs My Mother Taught Me, Antonin Dvorak

Suggested by Greg in Portland

In honor of my late mother.

Spring 1, Max Richter

Suggested by Candi in Portland, Oregon

It sounds so much like spring!

The Planets: Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity, Gustav Holst

Suggested by Liezel in Sandy, Oregon

I first heard this piece when I was watching my favorite tv show, "Bluey." I love this song because when I am feeling down it cheers me up. My whole family loves this piece too. My younger brother and sister hum it when they are bored. My sister even learned it on the piano and cello.

Grand Canyon Suite: Sunset, Ferde Grofe

Suggested by Andrea in Portland, Oregon

This is wonderfully relaxing and inspiring. These days when we hardly know from one day to the next what will happen, music like this ties our feet to the ground while we soar, knowing that all will be well.

Polonaise No. 6 in A-flat, “Heroic”, Frederic Chopin

Suggested by Claire in Ontario, Canada

As a young aspiring pianist, I greatly enjoy exploring the different composers and styles. I can say with certainty that this piece is one of my favorites.

Xerxes: Ombra Mai Fu, G. F. Handel

Suggested by Joshua in Forest Grove, Oregon

This aria always speaks peace and tranquility to me. Especially as we come into the spring, and the trees begin to cast their lovely shade once more, I am reminded of how Handel's treatment of of this melody is so delicate and lovely. It is a short little gem and I hope it brings you the rest that it does to me.

“Good Night” & “Penny Lane”, John Lennon / Paul McCartney

Suggested by Sean in Portland, Oregon

These recordings by Les Boreades are wonderfully genre-bending. Recorders, viols, lutes, Baroque oboes - all the usual suspects in a Baroque ensemble - getting together to play the Beatles. I heard this music live in concert in Montreal about ten years ago and was so astonished that one of the musicians came up to me afterwards to comment on my visible reaction.

Elijah: He is Watching Over Israel, Felix Mendelssohn

Suggested by Jim in Vancouver, Washington

Shortly after WW II, I traveled through Germany. I had a train lay-over in nearly totally destroyed Aachen, I walked through the devastated city until I heard singing coming from a bombed-out church. I went inside what was left of the building and found it packed with people - all standing, no seating - with a choir in the sanctuary (what little was left of it), singing this piece, in German of course. It was very, very moving and I shall never forget this great anthem.

I stayed for the full concert, missed my train connection, and had to over-night in a youth-hostel, and that was quite an experience. Twenty three years later, I re-visited rebuilt Aachen, and found that church, now beautifully rebuilt, and inside I again heard in my head those magnificent sounds of 23 years before, in that place - never to be forgotten!

String Quartet No. 2: Nocturne, Alexander Borodin

Suggested by Donna in Aurora, Oregon

Borodin has been my favorite since I was younger, listening to my parents record of the Broadway musical "Kismet." (Although Jan Sibelius comes a very close second!) This music just makes me.... FEEL.

Air date: April 13, 2021

Lucia di Lammermoor: Il dolce suono (The sweet sound) – Lucia’s “mad scene”, Gaetano Donizetti

Suggested by Michelle in Portland, Oregon

This is featured in my favorite movie "The Fifth Element" with Bruce Willis. I find its appearance in the movie significant because great orchestral music is a big part of the film's character. It's not just for old fogies or music nerds!

Air date: April 12, 2021
