Musica Universalis & In Medio Choir
October 19, 2023: Special guest host Brandi Parisi welcomes Musica Universalis and In Medio Choir to the Roger O. Doyle performance studio.
Musica Universalis will share a preview of their upcoming concert series, entitled Piercing the Veil: A Samhain Celebration, a musical and theatrical exploration of the Celtic origins of Halloween. In Medio will share highlights from their upcoming performances featuring music of William Byrd, in addition to African American spirituals, and more.
Musica Universalis is an early-music ensemble based in Portland, Oregon. The band plays mostly music of medieval Europe, with occasional time-traveling excursions to the more recent past. With an eclectic variety of projects including concerts, plays, dances, and even puppet shows, the group is equally at home on stage, in front of the stage, at the party, and in the tavern.

The name of the choir, In Medio, is Latin for “in the midst.” It is a reference to the process of creating something together and honors the importance of change. The best times in life are often when we are in the middle of something—be it a long-term project, a vacation, surrounded by friends and family, or in the middle of a choir. It’s the moment in which you forget the beginning and are not far enough along to see the end.
