Portland Baroque Orchestra
February 16, 2023: Host Christa Wessel welcomes cellists Annabeth Shirley and Adaiha MacAdam-Somer and the Northwest Edvard Grieg Society to the Roger O. Doyle performance studio.
Annabeth Shirley and Adaiha MacAdam-Somer will preview their upcoming concert of Bach’s cello suites played by the four cellists, and presented by Portland Baroque Orchestra. The Northwest Edvard Grieg Society will share snippets from their upcoming concert entitled “Flute Fantasy.”
Founded in 1984, Portland Baroque Orchestra is one of the largest period orchestras in the United States. PBO specializes in works of the Baroque and Classical eras, but also explores the musical world outside of those time constraints, performing with period instruments or replicas of instruments that were available when the music was composed. This means that concerts feature familiar instruments that may look or sound a little different (for example, violins with gut strings or flutes made of wood and bone) as well as instruments that are no longer a part of the modern orchestra (like the theorbo).

The mission of the Northwest Edvard Grieg Society is to promote the music of Edvard Grieg through performance, educational outreach and research in the Northwest of the United States. This includes creating and supporting individual performances, scholars, performers, educators, or larger projects that incorporate multiple aspects of their mission. Furthering their mission includes collaborating with organizations with mutual interests, including Nordic and/or music focused organizations, to support and encourage events and outreach that provides mutual benefit to them and the NWEGS.
