Portland Opera

November 14, 2024: Host Christa Wessel welcomes Portland Opera to the All Classical Radio studios.

Portland Opera’s Resident Artists will preview their upcoming production of The Juliet Letters, with music and lyrics by British post-punk icon Elvis Costello and the Brodsky Quartet. Based on Shakespeare’s character, Juliet Capulet, she continues to captivate us four hundred years later. This genre-bending collaboration features a unique song sequence for string quartet and voice that carries us on an intimate journey of hope, loss, and longing – all seen through the lens of love.

Join us Thursday at 3:00 PM PT at 89.9 FM in Portland, OR or from anywhere in the world via the live player on our website.

ABOUT

The collaboration between Elvis Costello and the Brodsky Quartet was born of mutual admiration and an interest in exploring the combination of voice and string quartet. Featuring voice and string quartet from the Portland Opera Orchestra. The Juliet Letters is sung in English.

Portland Opera has been bringing opera to life since the company’s founding in 1964. The first production was Johann Strauss II’s Die Fledermaus, which opened on November 7, 1964, at the Leodis V. McDaniel High School (then known as Madison High School). This first season also included Puccini’s beloved masterpiece, La Bohème, which (to date) has been the most performed opera in the company’s history.

Today, you can still find Portland Opera singers in parks and festivals around town, with their Opera a la Cart performances. Learn more at portlandopera.org.
