Thursdays @ Three: Portland Opera; Portland Chamber Orchestra

May 9, 2024: Host Christa Wessel welcomes the Portland Opera and the Portland Chamber Orchestra with Dr. Larry Sherman for Thursdays @ Three’s 400th episode.

Hear an exclusive preview of Portland Opera’s one-night-only concert featuring Giacomo Puccini’s enduring compositions.

Plus, the Portland Chamber Orchestra shares a sneak peek of their multi-media event celebrating mothers through a combination of classical and modern music, poetry, and a fascinating look into all the ways that motherhood changes the brains of both mothers and children throughout their lives. The program will be narrated by author, public speaker, and neuroscientist Dr. Larry Sherman.

Portland Opera has been bringing opera to life since the company’s founding in 1964. The first production was Johann Strauss II’s Die Fledermaus, which opened on November 7, 1964, at the Leodis V. McDaniel High School (then known as Madison High School). This first season also included Puccini’s beloved masterpiece, La Bohème, which (to date) has been the most performed opera in the company’s history.

Today, you can still find Portland Opera singers in parks and festivals around town, with their Opera a la Cart performances. Learn more at

The Portland Chamber Orchestra has chosen to be a beacon of unity that celebrates, welcomes, and embraces all people. Their concerts have always been a place to not just enjoy an artistic fusion experience but also serve as a haven where cultures and experiences are celebrated on stage in an effort to bring diverse people together and learn from and with one another.
