Tony Lu & 45th Parallel Universe
January 5, 2023: Gust host Warren Black welcomes pianist Tony Lu and 45th Parallel Universe for a live concert in the Roger O. Doyle performance studio.
Born in Wuhan, China in 1997, Tony Lu started learning and playing the piano at age 5. Due to his visual impairment, he has always learned music by ear. Tony began to study in the US in 2013 and has performed with various chamber music groups and orchestras in both high school and college. He recently performed Brahms’ D Minor Piano Concerto with the Sage City Symphony.
Tony earned a B.A. from Bennington College with concentrations in Mathematics, History and Piano Performance. He has worked closely and performed with many Bennington College music faculty, including Christopher Lewis, Yoshiko Sato, Joan Forsyth, Nathaniel Parke, Kaori Washiyama, and Allen Shawn. Tony also works as a piano tutor, music history, and analysis lecturer, and accompanist helping students in the music department. He is also an active faculty member of Sonata International Piano Camp and Summer Sonatina International Piano Camp in Bennington, VT.
45th Parallel Universe is a collective of musicians who come together to celebrate great chamber music with intimate artistic experiences. Since 2009, the organization has happily demolished distinctions between old and new chamber music, bluegrass and jazz, fiddle and folk. By bringing fragmented audiences together, 45th Parallel Universe reflects Portland’s surging creative communities in fresh and imaginative ways.
