Presenting the winners of the Travis Hatton Young Artist Competition! 

Three finalists are selected from dozens of local student musicians at the THYAC recital in February to perform with full orchestra. The selected concerto performances will be the centerpiece of this season finale concert, framed by two powerful works from the Romantic era: Richard Wagner’s stirring Overture to Tannhäuser and Amy Beach’s sweeping “Gaelic” Symphony. 

Last season’s performance of American composer Howard Hanson’s Symphony No. 2 was met with such a positive response, Music Director Pierre-Alain Chevalier decided to feature another American composer for this season’s finale. Beach’s “Gaelic” is a landmark work by one of the earliest major American symphonists and the first American woman to have her symphony performed by a major orchestra. While inspired by Gaelic musical traditions, Beach’s symphony is rooted in the expressive language of the Romantic era, offering music that audiences of all kinds can enjoy.
