Choral Arts Ensemble of Portland joins Resonance Ensemble and Orchestra Nova Northwest to present Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Gabriela Lena Frank’s Conquest Requiem, alongside the world premiere of a new work for chorus and orchestra by Portland composer Giancarlo Castro.
Inspired by the true story of La Malinche—a Nahua woman who served as translator and interpreter for Hernán Cortés—Conquest Requiem reimagines the traditional Latin Mass for the Dead through the lens of the Spanish conquest of the Americas. The result is a deeply moving work that invites audiences to reconsider a pivotal chapter of history through multiple perspectives.
Castro’s new composition honors the extraordinary life of Del Greenfield, lifelong social justice advocate and legendary Executive Director of Portland Physicians for Social Responsibility. Together, these works offer an evening of remembrance, reflection, and renewed understanding.
