Kate Remington Interviews Jon Batiste

All Classical Radio host Kate Remington recently spoke with multi-Grammy®, Oscar®, and Academy Award® winning singer, songwriter, and composer Jon Batiste about his latest project, Black Mozart. The just-released album is the second in his series exploring the music of Classical composers, which began with the music of Beethoven.

On Black Mozart, Jon reinterprets Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s most beloved melodies as Black American classical music, infused with influences from jazz, rags, stride, blues and stomps. The result is a vibrant conversation without words – not about genre, but pure expression.

Jon says the concept of the album is imagining what Mozart would have experienced if he’d been born in contemporary New Orleans and heard all different genres of music: Blues, Jazz, and Gospel, and how they might have augmented his music.

In their conversation, Jon tells Kate that he recorded the album over the course of one night, which gave him the opportunity to discover fresh aspects of Mozart’s music.
