Internationally renowned flutist Hubert Laws is one of the few classical artists who has also mastered jazz, pop, and rhythm-and-blues genres; moving effortlessly from one repertory to another. He has given annual performances at Carnegie Hall, and has performed sold out performances in the Hollywood Bowl with fellow flutist Jean-Pierre Rampal and was a member of the New York Philharmonic and Metropolitan Opera Orchestras. Pulitzer Prize and three-time Grammy-winner Jennifer Higdon will join MYS for an artistic residency and to attend the March 5 concert, during which MYS will perform the West Coast premiere of Higdon’s Cold Mountain Suite. Winner of the International Opera Award for Best World Premiere in 2016, Cold Mountain debuted as an opera, telling the story of a Confederate soldier grappling with conflicts of violence, love, and redemption. The piece was co-commissioned by MYS through New Music for America in cooperation with The League of American Orchestras and a consortium of 15 professional orchestras.
Accompanying the Cold Mountain Suite are four selections from Margaret Allison Bonds’ The Montgomery Variations (Decision, March, Dawn in Dixie, and Benediction). Based on the African American Spiritual “I Want Jesus to Walk with Me” and edited by John Michael Cooper, these variations focus on the Montgomery Bus Boycotts, the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing, and resistance to segregationist policies in the Jim Crow era.
Audiences will hear MYS students play the world premiere of a piece by student composer Margot Pullen as part of The Authentic Voice commissioning series. This project provides direct representation of young composers and conductors within the orchestra.
One of the winners of MYS’ annual Concerto Competition will be showcased, displaying mastery of challenging and mature solo repertoire accompanied by a full symphonic ensemble.
Sinfonietta Orchestra will also perform.

This piece is inspired by the story of Mukhtar Mai—a trailblazing Pakistani human rights activist who is a victim of sanctioned gang rape. She defied expectations to take her own life after the attack, deciding to live and seek justice. Her hope: open a village school for girls to learn to read and write, so that they may avoid the humiliation of signing their names with only a thumbprint.
This libretto originates from a series of interviews with Mai, paired with a score that is a dynamic collision of Hindustani and European opera influences.
Sung in English with captions. The matinee performance on Sunday, March 26 will be audio described.

After 15 years, OBT is thrilled to return its highly acclaimed commission of Yuri Possokhov’s Firebird to the stage. Based on the treasured Russian folktale of young Prince Ivan, his two loves, and a sorcerer whose evil spell must be undone, Possokhov’s Firebird is visually and musically arresting — a delight for audiences of all ages. This program also features the OBT premiere of Stanton Welch’s critically acclaimed Indigo. Striking and powerful, Indigo explores the relationships of four couples as they fall in love, break-up, and reunite, all expressed through Welch’s high-octane brand of dance. Last but certainly not least, we proudly present a world premiere from former New York City Ballet star and Paul Taylor Company resident choreographer, Lauren Lovette. Hailed by The New York Times for her “desire to turn ballet inside out” Lovette’s work has been presented by major national companies including American Ballet Theatre and New York City Ballet.

In a season of stories told through dance, we finish by creating our own. For this program we ask, “What have you heard about Portland, and how does it make you feel?” To explore this theme, we have commissioned renowned choreographers from near and far to share their vision of our city: Princess Grace Award winner Rena Butler, Guggenheim Fellow Helen Simoneau, push/FOLD Founder and Director Samuel Hobbs, and OBT’s own rising star, Makino Hayashi. This is only the tip of the iceberg as we invite Portland artists — musicians, painters, writers—to explore what it means to live in this city through a fully immersive theater experience.
