Inspired by Russian legends of nocturnal revels, Night on a Bald Mountain depicts a fiery witch’s sabbath and was inspiration for Walt Disney’s 1940 animated film Fantasia. Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8 dwells in a sunny, pastoral world filled with Bohemian folk melodies, rustic peasant dances, and lamenting nostalgia. Ying Li brings her “graceful, lyrical” (Cleveland Classical) strengths to Beethoven’s First Piano Concerto, a work of youthful brilliance.

Rachmaninov’s Second Symphony is beloved for its achingly beautiful melodies that melt the heart and marked a personal comeback for the composer after a debilitating crisis of confidence. Beethoven’s Third Piano Concerto is a landmark of his dark and restless period, here featuring Anthony Ratinov, lauded for “sporting a pianism at the highest level…with admirable dexterity and with stainless precision” (L’Ape Musicale).
