Light Opera of Portland, the metro area’s only dedicated Gilbert & Sullivan opera company, are taking their next production on the road this summer! A new staging of Iolanthe will be opening at the Brunish Theatre in downtown Portland in June, before heading west to perform at Hillsboro Artists Regional Theatre in July and August.
Iolanthe, originally performed in 1882, tells the story of Strephon and Phyllis, two young shepherds engaged to be married. There are only two small problems; Phyllis is a Ward of Chancery, and cannot marry without the Lord Chancellor’s permission, while Strephon is secretly half a fairy (his legs are mortal) on his mother’s side! Strephon’s mother, Iolanthe, was banished for the crime of marrying a mortal, but is pardoned by the Fairy Queen and reunites with her sisters, and her son. The Lord Chancellor and the entire House of Lords (who are all in love with Phyllis themselves) arrive, but Phyllis rejects their offers of wealth and privilege for a life of simple honesty with the poor shepherd she loves.
Unfortunately, Phyllis and the Peers encounter Strephon and his mother Iolanthe, who being a fairy looks like a young maiden, and the Peers convince Phyllis that Strephon is unfaithful. Strephon calls on the fairies for help, and the Fairy Queen threatens revenge on the Peers by sending Strephon into Parliament with magical powers to pass any bill he wishes, including forcing the Peers to actually do their work instead of slacking off, and making it possible for common people to become nobles by passing a competitive examination!
Iolanthe features beautiful music by Sullivan as he references Wagner, Mendelssohn, and Handel, and Gilbert’s topsy-turvy satire takes aim at the pompous yet ineffectual political classes. Written at the height of their collaboration, it is widely considered to be one of their greatest comic operas.
Performances will take place at the Brunish Theatre June 28th – 30th, and at Hillsboro Artists Regional Theatre July 19th – August 4th. The stars align for the final concert of our Summer Festival celebrating Beethoven’s profound influence on the evolution of music. Messiaen’s transcendent Interstellar Call and Ravel’s heroic and nearly orchestral Piano Trio capture both the grace and power he brought to music. Beethoven’s masterfully entertaining Septet in E-flat Major—arguably, the greatest septet ever written—expresses his exquisite wit and joy. Don’t miss this exciting Summer Festival finale!

Canticum Novum: A New Song!
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the William Byrd Festival. For the first time in its history, programming will include British composers of the past century in addition to Byrd, whose music will be presented alongside works by Britten, Finzi, Howells, MacMillan, and others. Liturgical performances of Byrd’s three mass settings, Choral Evensong, and other long-standing festival traditions will remain and provide context as we explore Byrd’s legacy.

Join us for an evening of captivating guitar music spanning different eras and continents. This rare event showcases the exceptional talents of three distinguished artists from the US and abroad, performing both early music and contemporary compositions.
Andrew Flory’s program features solo works for theorbo and classical guitar. The title “Fourteen & Six” refers to the fourteen strings of the theorbo and the six strings of the classical guitar.
The evening will open with Cesar Quevedo & Daniel Reyes Llinás, the guitar duet “Selva Espiral.” They will perform music by Ernesto “Teto” Ocampo, whose modern guitar compositions are inspired by the traditional “Arhuaco” music of Colombia’s Sierra Nevada region. Additionally, the duet will present their own original compositions.

The great love between Acis and Galatea has been the subject of poems, paintings, operas, and statues throughout the centuries. When the jealous cyclops Polyphemus becomes crazed by his unrequited love for the sea-nymph Galatea, he kills her beloved, the mortal Acis. Devastated, Galatea transforms Acis into a river, in which she can live with him, forever united. Ultimately, in this timeless myth, love endures and overcomes all, even death. This great love story is infused with Handel’s “music of exquisite beauty.”

Event Details

OPERA IN THE PARK Portland presents its 22nd Annual Opera in the Park event, featuring a world-class cast of internationally acclaimed singers, and full chorus and orchestra under the direction of Keith Clark. After over 20 years of performing in the Washington Park, OPERA IN THE PARK Portland is bringing La Traviata to THE EAST SIDE this year: the beautiful Peninsula Park Rose Garden, at 6pm on Sunday August 4th, 2024. As always, the concert is open to all, and is offered FREE of charge.
Arguably Verdi’s most beloved opera, La Traviata tells an unforgettable tale of love, passion, and selfless sacrifice. Set in Paris, the opera follows the tragic tale of the courtesan “Violetta”, as she struggles to reconcile her own desires with an ongoing illness and society’s expectations. With its unforgettable melodies and poignant drama, it isn’t hard to see why La Traviata continues to be one of the most enduring masterpieces in the operatic canon.
This production will feature soprano AUBRY BALLARÒ singing the iconic role of “Violetta”, tenor CÉSAR DELGADO as her naive lover “Alfredo”, and baritone LUIS LEDESMA as his domineering father “Germont.” Other principal artists include Opera in the Park veterans, bass-baritone DEANDRE SIMMONS, and soprano JOCELYN CLAIRE THOMAS.
This event promises to be an unforgettable evening that combines the magnificence and power of Verdi’s music with the natural beauty of the pacific northwest. The open-air performance will enchant and transport audiences, offering a unique and immersive operatic experience. Perfect for opera lovers, and first time opera goers alike, don’t miss this opportunity to be a part of this extraordinary night of music, drama, and community.
Opera in the Park Portland is a non-profit organization dedicated to the enrichment of cultural life in Portland. We believe that OPERA IS FOR EVERYONE, and are committed to presenting annual free operatic performances in beautiful and accessible venues in the Portland Metro Area. All are welcome! A contemporary ode to William Byrd reads: “None suche I feare shall rise that may be calde his sonne.” Besides his monumental choral output, William Byrd was also widely renowned in his time for his role in the development of a uniquely English style of keyboard music, one that was abandoned in the decades after his death. Harpsichordist Eugene Petrushansky explores the music of Byrd, his immediate antecedents, his late 17th-century successors, and the 20th-century resurgence of interest in the old repertoire.

Les Arrivants Abdul-Wahab Kayyali: Oud; Amichai Ben Shalev: Bandoneon; Hamin Honari: Percussion (Tombak, Daf: Frame Drums)
Les Arrivants (The Arrivals) is comprised of Amichai Ben Shalev (bandoneon), Abdul-Wahab Kayyali (oud), and Hamin Honari (percussions), three musicians who settled in Montréal during the COVID-19 pandemic between the summers of 2019 and 2020. Through the lens of this unique moment in history, they met and discovered their new home city as lockdowns and uncertainties permeated their lives.
The repertoire Les Arrivants developed are mirrors of their resettlement experience. It is informed by the traditions the instrumentalists have mastered throughout their careers – Argentine Tango, Classical Arabic music, and traditional Persian rhythms. It equally reflects the musical possibilities that can only emerge out of a cosmopolitan centre such as Montréal. In other words, Les Arrivants have created an introspective sonic experience that depicts the relationships and views of newcomers to Montréal, while channeling complex emotions associated with migration and travel.

IVES (arr. Schuman) Variations on “America”
GERSHWIN Rhapsody in Blue
with Orion Weiss, piano
BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 6, “Pastoral”
The Festival season opener celebrates two landmark anniversaries: Charles Ives’ 150th birthday and his brilliant Variations on “America,” plus the 100th anniversary of George Gershwin’s immortal Rhapsody in Blue with pianist Orion Weiss. After intermission, Beethoven’s “Pastoral Symphony” is a musical depiction of five scenes in nature.
One of the most sought-after soloists of his generation, Orion Weiss is widely regarded as a “brilliant pianist” (The New York Times) with “powerful technique and exceptional insight” (The Washington Post). With a warmth to his playing that outwardly reflects his engaging personality, he has dazzled audiences with his passionate, lush sound and has performed with dozens of orchestras across North America.
From August 10-23, 2024, Sunriver Music Festival will fill Central Oregon with world-class music. Artistic Director & Conductor Brett Mitchell leads world-class orchestra musicians and acclaimed soloists in a remarkable 47th season held in two venues, the iconic Tower Theatre in downtown Bend and Sunriver Resort’s historic Great Hall.
Programs include four classical concerts, a pops concert, a solo violin performance and the family-friendly “Discover the Symphony” concert. The Summer Concert Series opens August 11 at the Tower Theatre and closes August 23 at Sunriver Resort’s Great Hall.
“One of my favorite things about Central Oregon is the power of nature that we’re able to witness all year round, so I’m particularly thrilled to share with you an entire season filled with pieces inspired by the four classical elements: earth, water, fire and air,” said Mitchell. “Composers for centuries have been inspired by the enormity and grandeur of nature, and I know you’ll be just as inspired when you hear their extraordinary music.”
“This summer, Central Oregon residents and visitors will experience eclectic live music performed by talented musicians from around the country, both in the orchestra and as guest soloists,” said Executive Director Meagan Iverson. “Maestro Mitchell is an esteemed conductor with a dedication to artistic excellence, creative concert curation and inspired community engagement.”
Ticket sales for Friends of the Festival members begin as early as April 1; tickets are available to the public on June 1. Members have first choice of the best seats, plus receive ticket discounts, gifts, invites to special events, and potential tax benefits.
Other events prior to the Summer Concert Series include Piano Showcase at the Tower with Sean Chen and Arthur Migliazza on March 16, Swings fore Strings Golf Tournament on June 2, Young Artists Scholarship Recital on June 7 and the Festival Faire Fundraising Gala in July. More information on year-round events can be found at sunrivermusic.org.
Sunriver Music Festival also presents free music education events, masterclasses and spontaneous chamber music concerts during these two weeks in August. Most orchestra rehearsals are free and open to the public. More details to be announced.
Patrons who purchase a full six-concert series of classical concerts, pops and solo recital receive a 10% discount. Other flexible package options are available.
Details and tickets are available at sunrivermusic.org or by calling 541-593-9310.
Sunriver Music Festival is a year-round nonprofit presenting world-class orchestral performances and supporting music education throughout Central Oregon. Through a commitment to excellence, collaboration and innovation, the Festival seeks to foster a lifelong love of classical music in its many diverse forms. Tickets start at $53; tickets for age 25 & under $25

A tiny elf, who lives within a rose in a large garden, witnesses a violent murder. Forever changed—moved, bewildered, affected—the elf strives to give comfort and closure to the victim’s beloved. The incredibly rich world of Hans Christian Andersen’s fantastical tale is brought to vivid life by the music of David Hertzberg, hailed as “an absolute phenomenon. Such lush, decadent musical passages and ecstatic vocal lines I’ve rarely heard from a young composer. Hertzberg gave us splendid moments when I was sure I was hearing something straight out of the late Romantic period.” – Parterre

The Festival season finale features Musica Celestis, a beautiful, meditative work by Aaron Jay Kernis, and Michael Torke’s Sky, a bluegrass-inspired concerto written for and premiered by Tessa Lark. The season closes with Mozart’s brilliant and ever-popular “Jupiter” Symphony.
