Refugee Composers

Erich Wolfgang Korngold redefined the role of music on the big screen in Robin Hood, The Sea Hawk and others. His colleague Franz Waxman wrote for movies such as Sunset Boulevard and Stalag 17. Both managed to leave Nazi Germany before the start of World War II, and on the next edition of The Score host Edmund Stone examines the careers of these and other composers who fled Hitler and found a new home in American cinema. The program airs at 2 p.m. on Jan. 28.

“Vital and Creative”

That opinion from NPR sums up the genre-defying string quartet Brooklyn Rider. They are attracting legions of fans and drawing acclaim from critics, and Friends of Chamber Music presents this innovative ensemble in one performance only, at 7:30 p.m. on January 28 in Reed College's Kaul Auditorium. On the program are works by Philip Glass, Beethoven and others. For tickets, call 503-224-9842 or use this link.

Glass Turns 75

Composer Philip Glass turns 75 on Jan. 31. That makes this Saturday's Club Mod (Jan. 28 at 8 p.m.) a perfect time for an encore broadcast of Glass’s Orpheus-inspired opera Orphee. The performance was given by Portland Opera in 2009. It was not only the company’s first recording, but also the first complete recording of Glass’s opera, which was based on a scenario by Jean Cocteau.

Club Mod airs this and every Saturday evening from 8 to 10.

Letters From Listeners

We enjoy listening to the station and joined as members recently.  In December we visited our daughter who was studying in Ferrara, Italy.  We greatly enjoyed spending Christmas in Italy.  But, we did keep one foot back in Portland.  Each day we played the station using the internet, and your music filled our apartment.  We were particularly glad to be able to enjoy the Festival of Carols, despite being so far away. --Steve, Portland

Thank you very much for playing  the Tannhauser Overture today. My husband and I are recent Wagnerphiles, and all classical is the only station we listen to (new members this year). It is wonderful to hear Wagner outside of the opera program. Thank you so much for enriching the community in such an important way!  --Jennifer, Portland

I just emailed to say I’m a 19 year old student from University of Ontario Institute of Technology in Oshawa that loves classical music while I study for university exams. I’m a big fan of this site! We young music lovers are a dying breed. Don’t quit on us! If you want requests I’d love to hear Por Ti Volare or anything Bach! --Cheers, Matt
