Directed by Gemma Whelan
A scream from the streets. A plea to be seen as human.
Embodying Irish humor and tenacity, Myra chronicles her struggle with alcoholism and the generational and political traumas that fuel it. She introduces a cast of colorful characters from her working-class Dublin community, whose own challenges fill in the larger picture of a battered but resilient Irish society.

Climb aboard for a swashbuckling adventure that’s part “Pirates of the Caribbean,” part “Treasure Island ”, with a set list of exciting original rock songs and heavy metal sea shanties by local writers! Featuring a live band, epic battles, rollicking choreography, and a colorful cast of characters, “The Jolly Riot” has everything we love about the pirate genre: rum, sea monsters, mermaids, sword fights, rum, bad pirate accents, and more rum!
Josephine Doyle has been slaving away serving ‘taters and grog to the many pirate patrons of The Sunk’n Norwegian Tavern since she was a small child. Her world is suddenly turned upside down when she joins the crew of cutthroat pirate, Captain Red Molly Robinson, in search for the infamous treasure of a terrifying sea monster. Along the way, Jo must face murderous mermaids, treacherous ocean storms, and a massive sea monster, all the while finding her place among the crew and the strength to stand on her own. Rated RRRRRRR …. Just kidding! It’s rated PG. Recommended for ages 8 and up.

Experience two world premiere works that wildly reimagine classic Stravinsky ballets – The Rite of Spring from Resident Choreographer Ihsan Rustem (sponsored by Martin Christoph Müller), and Petrushka from Associate Choreographer Joseph Hernandez (sponsored by Ronni Lacroute).
About this new version of The Rite of Spring: The premiere of The Rite of Spring, over 100 years ago, which caused a public outcry and a riot, is arguably the most famous scandal in the history of the performing arts. The work is bold, powerful, challenging, polarising even. After Bolero and Carmen, Resident Choreographer Ihsan Rustem looks at Stravinsky’s most-known work through the lens of The Chosen One…a fiercely rebellious soul who wishes to shape the course of their own destiny. Expect the unexpected.
About this new version of Petrushka: Petrushka: A Contemporary Fantasia on Classical Themes is a dance piece choreographed by Joseph Hernandez with music (mostly) by Igor Stravinsky. This Petrushka takes aim at tradition from a place of criticism but also a place of love. The piece asks the questions, “What remains when we try to separate beloved art pieces from their problematic nature?” “Is this even possible?” Hernandez and his collaborators at NW Dance Project are devoted acolytes of beauty and connection, wherever they can find it. Through the course of this piece, they hope to uncover a realm of humanity and empathy, beneath layers of history, politics, and the machinations of power.

Alexander Korsantia, the piano world’s “quiet maverick” (Daily Telegraph), makes his long-awaited PPI debut with a program contrasting the graceful pianism of Classical Vienna with the ravishing bravura of one of Stravinsky’s most groundbreaking ballets — presented for our audiences in the pianist’s own breathtakingly virtuosic transcription.
A work of great tenderness, Schubert’s Sonata in G Major enchants the listener with serene melodies and moments of effortless, ethereal beauty. And Stravinsky’s Petrushka — with its bustling Shrovetide Fair, replete with acrobats, dancing bears, and magical puppets brought to life — celebrates the collective power of music and dance and the inherent tragedy of love unrequited.

The Oregon Chorale’s debut at the Patricia Reser Center for the Arts features the hauntingly emotional music of two of Central Europe’s most renowned modern composers. Henryk Górecki’s Marian Songs (Pieśni Maryjne), op. 54 features five a cappella movements comprised of musical prayers to different aspects of the Virgin Mary, the patron saint of Poland. Gorecki incorporates Polish folk and sacred music into a gorgeous, flowing, and seemingly simplistic style shaped by modernist elements. Latvian composer Ēriks Ešenvalds’ Passion and Resurrection uses texts drawn from Catholic, Protestant, and Byzantine liturgy brought to life through powerfully emotional music. Our guest artist, soprano Arwen Myers lends her stunning talent to this captivating masterpiece accompanied by a professional string orchestra.

Beethoven’s early Sonata in E-flat Major finds the composer already pushing against the boundaries of Classical style — especially in its alluring slow movement, filled with breathtaking silences in which time stands still. Cascadia Composers is celebrating the centennial of the birth of Gyὂrgy Ligeti, the composer whose music captured the ear of the public when film directors, including Stanley Kubrick and Martin Scorsese, used his stunning sounds in films such as 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Shining, Shutter Island, and Eyes Wide Shut. The concert will feature works from throughout Ligeti’s career, including Six Bagatelles for wind quintet, selections from his Etudes for Piano (which inspired the biggest epidemic of etude-writing since the days of Chopin), and his surrealistic fantasy for soprano and piano, Mysteries of the Macabre.
The concert will also feature premieres by members of Cascadia Composers whose music reflects Ligeti’s continuing, inspiring influence today: Portland composer and Lewis & Clark professor Michael Johanson; Portland composer, pianist, and educator Gary Noland; Eugene-based composer and pianist Paul Safar; Bay Area composers John Bilotta and Antonio Celaya; European-trained composer Alex Shapira, and Italian composer, pianist and sound designer Daria Baiocchi.
Performers will include wind ensemble Arcturus Quintet, coloratura soprano Madeline Ross, violinist Emily Cole, and pianists Myrna Setiawan, Rebecca Stager, Colleen Adent, Ben Gimm and Alexander Schwarzkopf. The Arcturus Quintet features Joe Berger, horn; Zachariah Galatis, flute; James Shields, clarinet; Steve Vacchi, bassoon; and Karen Wagner, oboe.

In a season of stories told through dance, we finish by creating our own. For this program we ask, “What have you heard about Portland, and how does it make you feel?” To explore this theme, we have commissioned renowned choreographers from near and far to share their vision of our city: Princess Grace Award winner Rena Butler, Guggenheim Fellow Helen Simoneau, push/FOLD Founder and Director Samuel Hobbs, and OBT’s own rising star, Makino Hayashi. This is only the tip of the iceberg as we invite Portland artists — musicians, painters, writers—to explore what it means to live in this city through a fully immersive theater experience.

Over-privileged Orlando enjoys the fruits of his father’s labor, but is embarrassed by his old-fashioned ideas and line of work. When the business faces turmoil just as Orlando is going through a crisis of his own, the two must face tough truths about citizenship, business, love, and the importance of family, in order to keep their dreams alive in a society that won’t let them truly belong.

Ah, love! That most universal of human emotions. It can engender so much: beauty, happiness, transcendence, confusion, heartbreak, resentment, murder…and children. Join one of Portland’s newest vocal groups, the Radix Vocal Ensemble, for an eclectic, entertaining celebration of love in all of its manifestations.
Delight in the lush, intricate perfection of medieval motets by Dunstable and Machaut; savor the beauty of time-tested folk melodies in “Durme, Durme” (arr. Parker) and “Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, and Thyme” (arr. Coates); pat your foot to Taylor Kuntz’s absolutely swingin’ close-harmony jazz arrangement of “Shiny Stockings” or the laid-back groove of “Dream a Little Dream of Me,” arranged by Radix member Naama Friedman. Hear fundamental truth in musical form in Ysaye Barnwell’s “On Children”; ponder the dark side of sisterly love in a new setting of the folk ballad “The Singing Bones” by Radix director Amy Stuart Hunn; and our closer will have you dancing in the aisles (sorry, you’ll have to come to find out what it is)!

Join Satori Men’s Chorus for their June concert blockbuster, “Summer Daze”, featuring a wide-ranging, funtastic mix of musical entertainment. This one-performance-only, family-friendly concert, under the direction of Susan Dorn, with accompaniment by Ben Milstein, will be held at Unity of Portland.
Satori Men’s Chorus offers a musical extravaganza unlike anything before. It’s Satori Men’s Chorus like you’ve never experienced it! One minute you hear the music of Elton John and the next minute, it’s Neil Young! First, it’s the Backstreet Boys, and then it’s Toto! And just when you think you’re ready for what comes next … you aren’t! Here comes Dion, followed by some classical pieces and then it’s Queen! Say what? And just what do all these diverse musical styles and artists have in common? Satori Men’s Chorus, that’s what!
But it’s OK … there’s reason to the rhythm and rhyme. Satori Men’s Chorus is closing their 2022-2023 season with their Annual Fun-Filled June Concert. This is the event that’s full of all that “lazy, hazy, crazy daze of summer” where it’s time to let loose and just go for it! Be there for the opportunity to go wild and crazy! This is your chance to support Satori Men’s Chorus as we look forward to our upcoming 30th anniversary and next year’s season full of scheduled concerts and special activities such as outreach concerts, education, and much more. Plan on being a part of this song-filled “Summer Daze”!

The Jewish Community Orchestra is proud to present our 48th season finale. This concert is dedicated to our Principal Bassoon and long time Board member, Cara Brauner, who passed away suddenly on April 20th. Her cheerful spirit, deep love of classical music, and dedication to the Jewish Community Orchestra of Portland will be sorely missed.
We’ll start the evening with the Overture to “Die Fledermaus” by Johann Strauss. This iconic piece sets the tone for an evening of musical magic, with its lively rhythms that will transport you straight to the halls of Vienna.
Following this, we are honored to perform the world premiere of the Folksong Suite for Strings and Timpani, written by Frederick Naftel. This is an incredible opportunity to witness a brand new composition by a living Jewish composer. Frederick received an award from the prestigious Paul Hamlyn Foundation in May 2020, having been nominated for a prize by Sir James MacMillan.
The season finale culminates with the magnificent Symphony No. 2 in D, op. 73 by Brahms. From the soaring melodies to the intricate harmonies, this piece is a testament to the power and beauty of classical music.
Whether you are a long-time member of our audience or brand new, we are excited to share this concert with you and look forward to seeing you on June 11th!

Father and son, Mando and Orlando, are living different versions of the American Dream. Honduran-born Mando built a successful janitorial business, and can pay for his son’s fancy private school.

Poetry and music, two of the most evocative art forms, are often intertwined to create an interdisciplinary experience called art song. German, English, and Persian poetry are the inspirations for songs by Johannes Brahms and world premiere songs by CMNW Protégé composer Kian Ravaei. The program is capped by one of Brahms’s grandest and most glorious works of all, his second Piano Quartet. Music can be an extraordinary expression of personal suffering, loneliness, loss, and ultimately triumph. The wild colors of Alexander Scriabin’s brilliant third piano sonata, the penetrating soulfulness of the folk songs of the great Armenian priest Komitas, and the symphonic scale of Richard Strauss’s chamber music make this the most wide-ranging concert of the summer festival. Chinese-American composer Wang Jie’s world premiere for Pierrot ensemble and narrator, Blame the Obituary, is simultaneously a whimsical, comical, and bleak musical picture of life during the trying last few years. Wang Jie’s husband and host of the radio show Performance Today, Fred Child, narrates with pathos and self-deprecating humor.

The blossoming of the salon in 19th Century Europe is a great example of creating social circles in support of art in general and various composers and musicians in particular. Art, poetry and music lovers would host social gatherings in their home, salons, and invite a mix of arts supporters and artists. The Schubertiade grew out of this tradition
This social-artistic phenomenon also paralleled the evolution of the piano as it gradually became a more reliable and responsive instrument, capable of ever-increasing shades of expression. The piano often served as the centerpiece for salon gatherings, given its versatility and increasing popularity.

OPERA IN THE PARK Portland presents Giuseppe Verdi’s dramatic “Rigoletto”, starring acclaimed baritone Luís Ledesma as Rigoletto and American soprano Aubry Ballerò in her Oregon debut as his daughter Gilda. Dashing Mexican tenor César Delgado is the Duke of Mantua. Our Artistic Director, Keith Clark, winner of the prestigious American Prize for Opera Conducting, leads the production.
