In early February, the Portland Winter Light Festival returns to the city. This time, attendees will be treated to a magical, ephemeral experience of music in a most unexpected location. Visitors to PSU’s Urban Plaza will be able to look up from the street to see (and hear) a giant color video projection of acclaimed violinist Tomás Cotik, professor of violin at the School of Music & Theater, playing selections by Bach, Telemann, Piazzolla, and Tárrega.
The project, which runs Feb. 3-5, is titled “Ombra Musici II” (“musician’s shadow” in Italian), and is the result of a collaboration between Cotik and Dave Colangelo, a professor of digital creation and communication at Ryerson University. The team received a National Endowment for the Arts grant to produce the project, which expands on “Ombra Musici,” presented at the 2019 Portland Winter Light Festival, where moving silhouettes of musicians were projected onto the PSU Library facade.
“Life has been radically altered by the effects of the pandemic,” says Cotik, who notes that, while arts activities in particular were halted during COVID-19, the human need for catharsis, comfort, and entertainment only grew. With this project, Cotik aims to surprise and delight viewers with a performance of classical music that can be experienced alone or in communion with other festival-goers—offering a moment of beauty and solace at the darkest time of winter.
“I am convinced that as musicians, an important responsibility lies in our involvement with our community, passing on our passion, and giving back,” says Cotik. “For him, the project embodies of PSU’s motto—Let knowledge serve the city—by sharing the beauty and healing qualities of music with Portland and its citizens. —Hispanic Magazine
Latin jazz vocalist Jessie Marquez blends Cuban, Brazilian, jazz, and pop sounds in duos with lush harmonies and cool grooves. Her duo performance with pianist Clay Giberson combines songs and stories with loving and longing themes that reflect Marquez’s “cool and inviting” style (The Urban Flux). Marquez got on-the-job training in Havana, where she recorded with members of the Afro-Cuban Allstars.

In a rare mega-concert event, the “technically flawless and deeply expressive” (The New York Times) cellist Alisa Weilerstein, performs all six of Bach’s powerfully moving Cello Suites in a single concert. Weilerstein — featured in our 2020-21 virtual concerts — is known for her commanding performances of cello repertoire classics, and this intimate solo cello feat of musicianship is of epic proportions. This exciting music marathon will have an early start time, and an extended intermission with rejuvenating sustenance and libations before embarking on the second half.
“An exceptional cellist and distinguished musician…Weilerstein has carefully considered the path through these works, finding a magnitude of emotion. Weilerstein’s contemporary approach is respectful of the Baroque origins but brings a highly expressive performance.”

Being famous is sometimes a burning desire from a young age. And sometimes, it’s an accident. In either case, fame teaches you things—about yourself, about hard work, about enjoyment, about pride, and about your impact on the world and others. From humble beginnings to adoring fans to looking back on achievements and lessons learned, we chart the course of celebrity through the correspondence of luminaries like Stephen King, Andy Warhol (of course!), Elvis Presley, Emily Dickinson, Bruce Lee, Marilyn Monroe, and Tom Hanks. Get a new perspective on fame from the famous in our most popular show!
Real letters by real people, read by great actors. Letters Aloud was founded in 2013 by Paul Morgan Stetler as a way to connect a live audience to famous (and infamous) historical figures through their intimate personal correspondence. Each show brings together letters from every era, curated to explore a central theme. Sounds academic—but the way we do it, it’s addictive. As one fan said, “It’s like literary crack.” With live musical accompaniment and a dynamic slide show, a Letters Aloud evening is guaranteed to inspire!

August Bournonville’s La Sylphide is a beguiling blend of storytelling and dance, complete with vengeful witches and magical forest spirits that will win your heart.
On the morning of his wedding to his sweet fiancée Effie, James awakens from a dream to see a mysterious and tantalizing Sylphide before him. Bewitched and mesmerized by her presence, his obsession with her sets off a fateful sequence of events where joy turns to sorrow, love to betrayal and infatuation to tragedy.
One of the jewels of the Romantic Ballet Era, this masterpiece boasts an enchanting score that will be brought to life by the OBT Orchestra.

Celebrated for their powerful, athletic style that reveals relatable, abstract storylines, push/FOLD creates dance “filled with vulnerability and humanity… full of nuances and beauty.” (Oregon ArtsWatch) The shining star of this program is an ethereal and moody piece that explores themes of home, acceptance, and belonging through high-impact and sweeping movement, floorwork, and dynamic partnering. Also on the program is Wolf, a mesmerizing duet set to heartfelt vocals expressing a loneliness and perseverance that evolves into tranquility and empowerment. Rounding all this out is the comedic noir, Dark Wings, an ode to jazz that tells the story of an isolated creature that transcends its life, guided and carried away by three friendly spirits.
This is a rare opportunity to take in the breadth and depth and push/FOLD’s impressive and moving work! February 24 & 25 at 7:30pm; February 26 at 4pm at the Patricia Reser Center for the Arts in Beaverton.

With this program we celebrate the incredible career and bid farewell to Principal Dancer Xuan Cheng. Since 2011, her unforgettable artistry and her magical, mesmerizing presence in ballets ranging from James Canfield’s Romeo and Juliet to Jiří Kylián’s Falling Angels have won the hearts of OBT audiences. Don’t miss this chance to say goodbye to OBT’s darling in the enchanting La Sylphide.

Pulitzer Prize and three-time Grammy-winner Jennifer Higdon will join MYS for an artistic residency and to attend the March 5 concert, during which MYS will perform the West Coast premiere of Higdon’s Cold Mountain Suite. Winner of the International Opera Award for Best World Premiere in 2016, Cold Mountain debuted as an opera, telling the story of a Confederate soldier grappling with conflicts of violence, love, and redemption. The piece was co-commissioned by MYS through New Music for America in cooperation with The League of American Orchestras and a consortium of 15 professional orchestras.
Accompanying the Cold Mountain Suite are four selections from Margaret Allison Bonds’ The Montgomery Variations (Decision, March, Dawn in Dixie, and Benediction). Based on the African American Spiritual “I Want Jesus to Walk with Me” and edited by John Michael Cooper, these variations focus on the Montgomery Bus Boycotts, the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing, and resistance to segregationist policies in the Jim Crow era.
Audiences will hear MYS students play the world premiere of a piece by student composer Margot Pullen as part of The Authentic Voice commissioning series. This project provides direct representation of young composers and conductors within the orchestra.
One of the winners of MYS’ annual Concerto Competition will be showcased, displaying mastery of challenging and mature solo repertoire accompanied by a full symphonic ensemble.
Sinfonietta Orchestra will also perform.

Conor McPherson’s mid-career masterpiece The Seafarer (opening March 9 and playing through March 26) is a Christmas fable that never goes out of season. A tale of redemption, McPherson’s high-stakes comedy involves poker playing, binge drinking, and unstable brotherly love. And unlike previous McPherson revivals by Imago – the Hitchcockian The Birds and the spooky Shining City – The Seafarer doesn’t simply allude to dark forces outside the world as we know it. This time, the Devil himself has a hand in the game.

And unlike previous McPherson revivals by Imago – the Hitchcockian The Birds and the spooky Shining City – The Seafarer doesn’t simply allude to dark forces outside the world as we know it. This time, the Devil himself has a hand in the game.

Latin Grammy® nominee Gina Chavez blends the sounds of the Americas with tension and grace. A 13-time Austin Music Award winner and Austin Musician of the Year, she and her band can be seen on PBS in “Gina Chavez: Live from the Kate.” She has completed a 12-country tour as a cultural ambassador with the U.S. State Department, uniting audiences from Texas to Uzbekistan and Venezuela to Saudi Arabia. Gina’s Spanish-language anthem, “Siete-D,” won the grand prize in the John Lennon International Songwriting Contest.
“Most striking is Chavez’s ease as she moves between social and love songs, between North American and Latin genres, and even between languages: When she passes mid-song from English to Spanish and back, it’s the most natural thing in the world.“ -The Boston Globe

You’ll be swept up by Sergei Rachmaninov’s Third Piano Concerto, which sparkles and charms from its deceptively simple first notes to the elation of a triumphant close, played by radiant American pianist Claire Huangci. Johannes Brahms’s overture — which he himself called “a very boisterous potpourri of student songs” — is infused with an irrepressible sense of fun. In between, we hear the Pacific Northwest premiere of Gabriella Smith’s new work ONE, part of our First Symphony Project showcasing talented young composers.

Event Details
This piece is inspired by the story of Mukhtar Mai—a trailblazing Pakistani human rights activist who is a victim of sanctioned gang rape. She defied expectations to take her own life after the attack, deciding to live and seek justice. Her hope: open a village school for girls to learn to read and write, so that they may avoid the humiliation of signing their names with only a thumbprint.
This libretto originates from a series of interviews with Mai, paired with a score that is a dynamic collision of Hindustani and European opera influences.
Sung in English with captions. The matinee performance on Sunday, March 26 will be audio described.
